About Melody Rose, Nacd.Dc, Ph.D.
I was a first generation college student, and higher education saved my life. Like many first gen students, the gift of an education changed my whole family’s trajectory, creating opportunity where there had been none. It opened up a financially stable trajectory, improved health outcomes, and broke generational cycles of teen pregnancy, poverty, and addition. Since graduating college, I have dedicated my professional life to making sure that what I was given remains possible for the next generation. Along the way, I served as a professor, hoping to inspire students’ college engagement and their public service. I climbed the administrative ranks, and had the enormous privilege of serving as both a university president and two-time public system chancellor. Now, in my 2.0 career, I am focused on identifying, placing, and supporting the next generation of higher education executives. Never before has great leadership been so badly needed in America’s colleges and universities. It is an honor to walk alongside the emerging leaders who are willing to take on today’s incredible challenges.I do this work with my amazing colleagues at WittKieffer. WittKieffer is the premier executive search and leadership advisory firm developing impactful leadership for organizations that improve quality of life. I help clients in higher education solve leadership challenges and strengthen their organizations. In addition to my professional accomplishments, I also raised four spectacular kids who are doing good in the world. In my free time, I enjoy cooking for my dearest friends and family. I need to stay active, from golf to dance, I enjoy it all. I'm delighted to combine my experience and interests into my volunteer activities, currently serving as the president of the International Women's Forum - Oregon and as chair of the Oregon Ballet Theatre Board. I'm deeply committed to developing and supporting talent wherever I see it. It inspires me. This year I celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Portland State's Center for Women's Leadership, which I founded because I saw a need for advancing women of all backgrounds into leadership positions.
