About Mel Moore

So, I'm leading with this because I'm really excited about it. My little TEDx talk got featured on the TED platform: https://www.ted.com/talks/melissa_moore_40_of_homeless_youth_are_lgbtq_what_we_can_do I previously served as Director of Organizing for Women's Rights and Empowerment Network, a nonprofit organization that advances the health, economic dignity, and wellbeing of South Carolina's Women, Girls, Gender Expansive People, and their families. I have built an organizing program at WREN from the ground up that has trained advocates across South Carolina about gender justice and connected them directly with decision makers. Thanks to these efforts, South Carolina continues to maintain access to abortion and gender affirming care, distinguishing itself as one of the few states in the region that upholds these essential services.I have spearheaded the development of a statewide organizing infrastructure that emphasizes sustainable and localized engagement in gender justice advocacy. Through this approach, I have led impactful campaigns that empower communities affected by these issues and enabled them to shape and pass policies that support their specific needs. Embedded in my organizing philosophy is the belief that meaningful change must involve the active participation and amplification of the voices of those most directly affected by the challenges at hand, guided by the principles of autonomy, independence, and solidarity- nothing about us, without us. Recognizing the pervasive influence of white supremacy and other oppressive systems, I am thoroughly committed to confronting and dismantling these structures both within myself and throughout all aspects of my work. I firmly adhere to the reproductive justice framework, advocating for the rights of individuals to make decisions about their bodies and lives within a broader context of socioeconomic and racial justice. My approach is further guided by the principles of abolition and transformative justice, unconditional positive regard, and community care.

  • Women'S Rights And Empowerment Network
    Director Of Organizing
Women'S Rights And Empowerment Network Jun 2022 - Feb 2024
    Charleston, South Carolina, United States
In this role, I built statewide organizing infrastructure from scratch, engaging a 40,000+ member network with a focus on grassroots organizing and gender justice philanthropy. One of the most successful programs I implemented in 2023 was “Meet Me at the Statehouse,” a grassroots lobbying initiative that connected hundreds of constituents to their legislators. I facilitated WREN’s Gender Justice Advocacy Fellowship and popular education programs to teach policy advocacy, strategic planning, community healing modalities, transformative justice, disability justice, intersectionality, and grassroots organizing skills. Training is nothing without evaluation! I conceptualized and developed evaluation processes for the Gender Justice Advocacy Fellowship, popular education offerings and skillshares, relational organizing strategies, and grassroots outreach tactics. I launched statewide grassroots organizing campaigns to promote bodily autonomy and pass policies that empower women, survivors LGBTQ+ communities, Disabled people, immigrants, Black, Brown, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority (BIPGM), and gender expansive people. Since assuming this role, I have helped block 50+ bills that would ban gender affirming care, ban drag performances, and remove the agency of survivors seeking abortion care, while passing Paid Family Leave for the K-12 workforce, making SC one of the last states in the southeast with accessible abortion care and gender affirming healthcare. I managed the launch and growth of WREN’s first grassroots organizing program and supervised diverse team of staff, organizers, and interns for optimal performance. I built relationships with high net-worth individuals and foundations to increase the yield and impact of fundraising campaigns and collaborated in a cohort of Global South reproductive health, rights, and justice leaders.
  • Women'S Rights And Empowerment Network
    Lowcountry Manager
Women'S Rights And Empowerment Network Aug 2019 - Jun 2022
    South Carolina, United States
Within my first 90 days of this role, I partnered with National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) to host a highly successful Lowcountry Summit, “Building Together: Harnessing Our Power for Gender Equity,” with Keynote Speaker, Brittany Packnett. I used the summit as a launch pad to establish a network of high net-worth donors, corporate partners, and national foundations to sustain WREN's work in the Lowcountry, SC region. I worked with the NWLC to co-author a research brief, "Data Reveal Multiple Barriers to Gender Justice in South Carolina" and a Change research poll of likely voters entitled "Our Voice 2020."During my time in this role, I recognized the harms of white supremacy in the reproductive rights landscape, which led me to develop a disability-accessible, anti-racist education curriculum that educated over 200 advocates and organizers around the state. In 2020, COVID devastated rural communities in SC. I secured a grant for a Gender Justice Tech Fund to deliver WIFI access to leaders in 8 rural areas during COVID quarantine. The widespread racial justice uprisings and protests related to the fall of Roe v. Wade inspired me to develop curricula and train 77 protest marshals, 20 police liaisons, 20 street medics, and 25 mental health crisis support volunteers to ensure that direct actions ran smoothly and as safely as possible. Lastly, I launched campaign and Day of Action for Bodily Autonomy which attracted a diverse group of over 300 South Carolinians.
