About Melvin Hewitt

Melvin L. Hewitt, Jr., an AV preeminent-rated lawyer, has been a member of the Georgia Bar since 1985. He concentrates on representing victims of crime and seriously injured people and their families in significant injury and wrongful death cases, including victims of assault, battery, sexual assault and abuse, child molestation, nursing home abuse and drunk drivers. Mr. Hewitt has also challenged and advanced claims against several school districts for their negligence in maintaining a safe environment from predatory teachers molesting school children. Mr. Hewitt serves on a number of local, state and national crime victim boards of directors including Atlanta Victim Assistance (AVA); the Crime Victim Advocacy Council (CVAC) where he served for seven years as president and now chairs the Advisory Board to CVAC; the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) where he currently serves as Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee; and the National Crime Victim Bar Association (NCVBA) where he currently sits as a member of the NCVBA Advisory Board. Mr. Hewitt has been a speaker at the National Organization of Victim Advocates (NOVA), the National Center for Victims of Crime (NCVC) and the National Crime Victim Bar Association (NCVBA) and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association (GTLA) as well as several local and state organizational meetings. In 2023, Mr. Hewitt was awarded The Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) Georgia Crime Victim Services Collaborative and Innovative Project Award. Mr. Hewitt is an AV-rated lawyer, which is the highest professional and ethical peer-review rating available to individual lawyers. Mr. Hewitt is a long-standing member of the Million Dollar Advocate Forum; has appeared on television and radio programs addressing issues of negligent security and civil justice for crime victims; and has published several articles relating to negligent security and crime victim issues in Trial Magazine, Calendar Call, The Prosecutor Magazine and The Connection.
