My Passion:Sleep is a cornerstone of physical and mental wellness, it aids us in our ability to focus, be effective in the workplace and manage stress both in our personal and professional lives. Sleep influences our moods, attitudes, food decisions and ability to problem solve. It has an impact on all areas of function and our quality of life. Given the significance of sleep I have chosen to focus my practice on combining my knowledge of cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy with my skills as an occupational therapist to provide effective evidence based treatment for insomnia. The Gap:Often the first line of treatment is a sleeping medication. Although this provides some short-term relief many people experience daytime drowsiness and can require higher doses over time or find that the medication becomes ineffective. There is a strong body of research that points to cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as the single best long-term treatment option for insomnia with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as an effective approach to addressing more intense levels of anxiety about sleep and periods of sleep loss. Currently there is a paucity of trained therapist who can provide this treatment. Where I come in:I am an advanced certified cognitive behavioural therapist with extensive hospital based experience providing cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia both in a group format and individually. I have experience providing both CBT and ACT to a diverse adult population including individuals with addictions, mood disorders, and severe and persistent mental illness. My style:
