About Prof Sir Mene Pangalos

I’m a lifelong scientist and was formerly a senior pharmaceutical executive at AstraZeneca led by science, driven by patients and are constantly pushing the boundaries of what science can do to deliver life-changing medicines to the people who need them most.Being able to create ground-breaking medicines has always excited me. The rate of change we are seeing across healthcare is more rapid than ever before and is opening up incredibly exciting opportunities not thought possible just a few years ago.Incredible technological advances are enabling us to increase our understanding of disease biology at a molecular level and discover what is driving many of our most complex diseases. The more knowledge we gain, the better we can predict the clinical success of our candidate drug molecules, accelerating their delivery to get the right treatments to the right patients.I am passionate about taking basic research and translating that understanding into the discovery and delivery of medicines that could transform the lives of patients. We are constantly learning from the people who live with the diseases our medicines treat. It is vital we understand their needs so we can make sure that any great science in the lab can make a real difference to their lives.

    Executive Vice President, Biopharmaceuticals R&D
    Astrazeneca Jan 2019 - Mar 2024
    Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Gb
As part of the Senior Executive Team, I lead Biopharmaceuticals R&D which focuses on Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM); Respiratory and Immunology and, opportunistically, Neuroscience and Microbial Science. We recently transformed our R&D into two therapy-focused organisations - Biopharmaceuticals R&D and Oncology R&D - to lead all our work from drug discovery through to launch. We share 13 functions specialising in key scientific capabilities from medicinal chemistry to biometrics, patient safety to data science and artificial intelligence (AI), and clinical innovation to device technology, all of which helps us accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of life-changing medicines to the people who need them most. One of my proudest achievements is helping create our 5R framework which guides our drug discovery and development by championing quality over quantity. This has led to the proportion of pipeline molecules advancing from pre-clinical investigation to completion of Phase III clinical trials from 4% to 19% in just five years. Our R&D culture is another huge source of pride for me. Everything we do is about inspiring people with curious minds who are free from failure, free to ask the right questions and free to make bold decisions. We ensure we work seamlessly and inclusively, that our doors are always open and our scientists can work in a permeable research environment, sharing ideas and collaborating with others. We are always harnessing the latest data and technology to fast-forward the pace of our science to help us achieve the next wave of breakthrough therapies. To do this, it is vital we continue to attract the brightest minds, the best talent and the boldest innovators – the people who share our passion for science and our belief in its potential to redefine the possible in order to have the greatest and swiftest impact on disease.
