Mengjun Li is a Ph.D candidate in Chinese literature at the Ohio State University. She specializes in traditional Chinese fiction and drama. Trained in Chinese literature and history, Mengjun Li is interested in combining literary history with other disciplines such as political and intellectual history, print culture, gender studies, and performance. Her dissertation brings into attention a corpus of largely overlooked novels from the repertoire of the so-called scholar-beauty fiction produced and circulated in the Qing dynasty. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, it examines this genre, arguably the earliest genre fiction in China, in the context of a prospering book market, the boom of novel writing, the ever more competitive civil service examination, and the political culture of the Qing. Mengjun Li has more than seven years of teaching Chinese language, culture, and literature at College of the Holy Cross and the Ohio State University.
