About M Wu

I am interested in scientific research and electro-mechanical device development related to human mobility and medical applications. My research experiences allow me to break down complex problems into testable questions, and my engineering skills enable me to design and build physical systems to answer those questions. I love to learn new concepts and methods and apply creative problem-solving. I bring a wide range of experience from fields of biomechanics, human motor control, mechatronics, visual arts, and dance/movement.

  • Vrije Universiteit Brussel
    Postdoctoral Researcher
    Vrije Universiteit Brussel
    Atlanta, Ga, Us
  • Vrije Universiteit Brussel
    Postdoctoral Researcher
Vrije Universiteit Brussel Sep 2024 - Present
    Brussels, Brussels Region, Belgium
I will be supervising PhD students on development of lower-limb prosthesis and upper-limb exoskeleton devices. My responsibilities will include project management and grant writing.
  • Emory University
    Phd Candidate
    Emory University Aug 2020 - Sep 2024
My research focuses on how hand interactions between two humans or a human and a robot can be used to aid and alter human walking. I have developed a novel robotic device to test different control strategies, including those based on haptic communication.
  • Emory University
    Lead Research Biomedical Engineer
    Emory University Aug 2019 - Aug 2020
    Greater Atlanta Area
    • Led data collection and analysis on human-human interaction study• Collaborated on development of novel linear robot to alter human gait• Integration, design, and maintenance of custom laboratory hardware and software systems• Trained graduate and undergraduate students in research/laboratory techniques
  • Northwestern University
    Neuromechanical Research Engineer
    Northwestern University Sep 2013 - May 2019
    Greater Chicago Area
Developed research problems and hypotheses, led scientific experiments, analyzed human biomechanics data, developed new hardware/software for experimental setups, integrating/troubleshooting/maintaining laboratory equipment, assisting in writing grants for research funding, authoring papers for scientific journals, and presenting at academic conferences, mentored students. My current research focus is on using haptic force fields to investigate human motor control strategies and biomechanical mechanisms during non-steady-state walking (i.e. maneuvers).
  • Rehabilitation Institute Of Chicago
    Research Engineer
Rehabilitation Institute Of Chicago Jan 2012 - Sep 2013
I supported research projects and assisted with lab management in the Single Motor Unit Lab, directed by Zev Rymer. I mainly worked on integrating hardware (including motors, force/torque sensors, and biological sensors) and software (including API's and real-time programming environments) into complex experiment setups. As part of my work, I have developed a novel microcontroller device to display audio and visual feedback on muscle activity. I also managed equipment and facilities for conducting experiments, including troubleshooting technical problems and supporting experiment design and planning.
  • Northwestern University
    Research Technologist
    Northwestern University Jan 2011 - Dec 2011
    Greater Chicago Area
I designed and carried out experiments on measuring biomechanical properties of the rat ankle. My last project involved creating a novel real-time feedback and feedforward controlled functional-electrical stimulation system for the rat hindlimb.
  • Johns Hopkins University Haptic Exploration Laboratory
    Research Assistant
Johns Hopkins University Haptic Exploration Laboratory Jun 2004 - Jul 2007
    Baltimore, Maryland Area
I worked on several haptic (related to touch sense) research projects with medical applications. I researched and implemented a representation of a haptic model of spasticity (a human motor disorder) in a robotic device, and collaborated with a research team to develop a novel mechanical device to also represent spasticity. I also worked on an independent project that investigated how people explore objects through touch (e.g. in palpation of human tissue for medical exams). Lastly, I worked on a study that examined human force control in haptic interfaces (e.g. in robot-assisted surgery). In addition to designing and carrying out human subject experiments for these projects, I also constructed novel robotic devices and programmed commercial haptic devices to simulate touch interactions and collect data. I performed reviews of scientific papers, carried out statisticaly analysis, and presented and published my research. I also had the opportunity to advise an undergraduate assistant on the spasticity simulation project. My research was conducted as part of the National Science Foundation Research for Engineering Undergraduates (NSF REU) Scholar program.
  • Univ. Of Pittsburgh Human Engineering Research Laboratory
    Undergraduate Research Scholar
Univ. Of Pittsburgh Human Engineering Research Laboratory Jun 2006 - Jul 2006
I collaborated on the design of a novel passive/mechanical steering system as part of a power wheelchair prototype for use in India. I learned a great deal about and tried best to implement design principles for developing countries, taking into consideration the environment/climate and available materials and manufacturing capabilities of the specific region of India. My work was conducted as part of the National Science Foundation American Student Placements and Internships in Rehabilitation Engineering Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF ASPIRE REU).
  • Beneficial Designs, Inc
    Project Assistant
Beneficial Designs, Inc Jun 2005 - Aug 2005
I collected data on a wide range of personal and recreational mobility devices (e.g. wheelchairs, scooters, bicycles, motorcycles) and regulations on accessibility for these devices to aid the design of a trail barrier that would allow persons with disabilities to access recreational trails while excluding large off-road vehicles that could damage the trails. I observed and measured several devices and spoke to device manufacturers and users to understand the potential effects of novel trail barrier designs.
