As a microbiologist at Intertek I was involved with all the different areas in the lab and flexibly swapped between tasks as needed. These tasks included:• Specimen reception and tracking, by labelling and sorting samples.• Preparation of food samples to be tested.• Preparation of a large range of media to use within the lab. I am fully trained in using autoclaves and automatic plate pourers.• Plate reading and counting.• Operating ELISA machines.• Sub-culturing bacteria and creating isolate colonies for further confirmatory testing.• Creating reference cultures. • Confirmation tests such as: gram staining, latex tests, rabbit plasma agglutination, API testing strips and more.• Ensuring standard operating procedures were followed and quality standards met using internal quality assessments.• Being conscientious of health and safety procedures and appropriate waste management.• Working with and managing the main lab technicians when a team leader or supervisor was not on site.
