Mere Bulles, French for Mother Bubbles, was the endearing name given to Michele Bouvier, a charismatic French woman who moved to the United States when she was 16 years old. She married a charming nobleman, Lucian Rutledge, from South Carolina and moved to her husband’s plantation in Charleston.She loved to cook and entertain, and always served champagne at her parties. Later in life, she was known to have as many as a dozen toasts during an envening at her restaurant, and the bubbly was never far from her stove when she was cooking. Her love of champagne earned her the nickname Mother Bubbles.Mother Bubbles’ great, great, grand niece was so captivated by her, that she and her husband opened Mere Bulles restaurant in Nashville in 1985 in her honor.
