About Meredith Guthrie

I am a historical researcher with a PhD in medieval English history. My doctoral research drew together strands of political, intellectual, and ecclesiastical history to explore the minority government of Richard II. (1377-1380). I am also interested in medieval law, political theory, medieval universities, warfare and diplomacy, royal prerogative and kingship, the Hundred Years War, and the politics and culture of the Low Countries in the late-fourteenth and early-fifteenth centuries. Within higher education, I have excelled at developing innovative and exciting ways to communicate Lancaster University’s research culture and achievements to international audiences and have a demonstrable record of raising the university’s reputation and profile. I also have experience in undergraduate teaching, REF impact support, and organising academic events.I have a professional background in entrepreneurial business formation and development, revenue generation, relationship management, and long-range planning. I was previously self-employed in the events and related industries for over ten years, acting as a supplier and subcontractor for private and corporate clients. My role was centred on business development, marketing, advertising, management, and forecasting. My skill sets are especially suited for taking abstract objectives and paring them down into executable and measurable points and overseeing their completion.

  • Epoch History Magazine
Founding Coordinating Editor (Until March 2022) And Medieval Specialist
Epoch History Magazine Jan 2020 - May 2024
As the founding coordinating editor, I developed the magazine to fill a gap in the market for other postgraduates who were looking to credibly share their research with non-specialist audiences. I drafted and developed all procedural and editorial processes for the first postgraduate history magazine at Lancaster University. This included strategies for communication, publication, distribution, promotion, and partnerships with related entities, such as the Lancaster Historical Postgraduate Conference. I petitioned for funding and partnerships to further the interests of the magazine. The magazine received international submissions which covered all periods and geographic regions. Within its first year, we worked with over eighty postgraduate authors from thirty institutions across the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, North America, and Southeast Asia. and attained an audience of over 13,500 readers. EPOCH’s success as a publication has led to in-person events, such as the 2022 Writer’s Summit, which attracted attendees from the United Kingdom, France, and Ireland.
