I coordinated logistics for IJM’s November 2018 Board meeting, including accommodations, meals, volunteers, technology, and other details related to Board experience. I served as the on-site point of contact for volunteer and Board questions and needs. I conducted and managed Board meeting feedback and developed materials and processes for future Board meetings.

I communicated with our global staff to gather major milestones and stories that captured International Justice Mission’s 20-year history. Compiling and organizing this information, I crafted timelines and feature stories for each of the 26 global offices and served as copy-editor for the entire project. I then coordinated with translators in order to make the content accessible to everyone in the organization. The timelines and stories were used for an immersive gallery and book.

I oriented, trained, supported, and supervised counselors; counseled campers who needed extra behavioral and social support; and managed the camp blog and social media accounts. I led whole staff and small group trainings on positive behavior management techniques. I met regularly with the counselors I supervised and utilized the camp’s staff development process and documentation to address strengths and areas for improvement.

Because the Santa Barbara branch of the Salvation Army is small, I was able to gain experience in many areas, including assisting caseworkers, preparing online and print materials, and interviewing clients. This facility catered to the homeless population in Santa Barbara, helping individuals find jobs and housing, while maintaining a strict sobriety policy. I assisted caseworkers with their check-ins and participated in meetings where we discussed tailoring case plans to fit individual needs. I interviewed members of the program to hear their stories and also wrote and created various documents as needed.

Knowing what a transitional time freshman year of college can be, I spent my senior year of college living with and mentoring freshmen students. I planned weekly social events to get to know my residents and help them form new friendships. I also planned dorm-wide events, including one called “Pizza and Postcards,” where we gave students an easy opportunity to discuss political issues and write about their opinions to their representatives (while eating pizza). I regularly checked in with my twenty-eight residents, was available to answer questions and offer support, and was frequently contacted to give advice and counseling. I was on duty for supervision of the dorm several evenings per week and was also involved in several mental health interventions.

Santa Barbara, California Area

I was nominated to work in the writing center by one of my English professors and received training in how to tutor students with their writing skills. For five semesters, I tutored in the Writing Center, helping students enhance writing skills and feel more confident in their writing abilities. Students were welcome to visit during any phase of the writing process; some students came to brainstorm ideas, others came to read through their essays and strengthen paragraphs, and still others came with citation and grammar questions.

I was selected by my professors to serve in this leadership role during our study abroad trip. My job was to facilitate weekly worship nights for the students for the duration of the semester. I met with my co-leaders prior to the worship time each week to plan passages, prayer times, and opportunities to speak and share. I was also available to pray with fellow students who wanted to further discuss their spirituality or relationship with God. Because we were on a traveling semester abroad program, we found different locations each week to meet. We encouraged student involvement by inviting individuals to participate in services as song leaders.

After completing a ten-day training focused on positive behavior management, leadership, and communication skills, I mentored my groups of eight- and nine-year old girls during their two-week sessions at camp. I lived with, supervised, and led discussions, songs, and games with my campers. For many of my campers, it was their first time away from home. I provided nurturing, counseling, and support to help them adjust to camp life. I created a safe environment for the kids to be fully themselves. I promoted the camp policy of unplugging from technology in order to experience time in nature and work on building what we call “REALationships,” ones that involve actually talking face-to-face with others. I helped children with their social, friendship, and teamwork skills and acted as their consistent leader, going to each daily activity with my group of girls. Watching quiet children come out of their shells and dance and sing by the end of their two-week session was truly a rewarding experience.
