I used to think that communication was just the decoration on how other very clever people terraform our world. That is still very true, but I also recognise that how the world works is a slave to what we say about it. I write and edit. Currently, I am writing a text book for McGraw-Hill International publishers. I also edit from non-fiction, biography and science to comedy and sci-fi. I have done a lot of academic editing. I have also written training material: this includes material suitable for people challenged by comprehension and designed for the access needs of people with diverse disabilities; material culturally sensitive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. (Note: I have asked some of my indigenous friends how I am doing and apparently I am still very Western in my thinking. Still trying.)I am good at pitching the writing to the needs of the user (and I can tell you the difference between UX and UI). I have also edited apps in code, tested their effectiveness and edited those apps in code. I have created websites from scratch that have interactive and linking elements, (of course I used SEO, alt text, tags and links that didn't get you lost). I have done many newsletters. I have also revised print newsletters to online formats. I am very good at taking complex or messy writing and turning it into something enjoyably readable. This is because I have a great sense of how to see through the fog of an author's intent to what they are really trying to say.InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Mailchimp, Wordpress – for someone who writes content, I have a lot of practical experience in communication design. What I can do is find the words that go with the pictures. I know how design enhances meaning. I stay current with how communication happens.
