I opened Tallow LLC in 2018 after years of experimenting with soap making, balm creating, and educating myself on natural remedies. When I became a mother in 2013, I quickly became disenchanted with skincare products that touted natural ingredients only to find that they weren't in fact natural at all. A question I often asked myself was, "why would I put this on my baby or my body?" It all began when one of my farmer friends had some suet that he couldn’t sell. One of my friend’s children had an awful case of eczema. I had read about the benefits of tallow (rendered suet) for skin issues and decided why not make a tallow balm if it could help his skin? Well, it helped the child's skin immensely and quickly my hobby became a bustling business in just a few months. Using my background in the hard sciences, I love combining the natural world with the chemical world to formulate products that are beautiful and entirely natural. At Tallow, we create products with form and function.People often ask, what is tallow? Tallow is a special kind of fat called “leaf fat” from cows. While it may sound unusual, tallow was used traditionally to make soap, balms, and candles, but as the western world advanced, a lot of these ancient methods were forgotten. Unfortunately for many, tallow these days is considered a waste product and rarely used, but I try to encompass the "hoof to tail" philosophy and use all the parts of the animal. I feel good that we only source tallow from farms that practice sustainable, humane, and organic methods. I feel even better that we revere the animal by using all parts of it instead of letting any of it go to waste. I try my best to live a natural and holistic lifestyle, supporting farmers, buying locally from small businesses, and teaching my children why this is important. I pour so much of my heart and soul into making these products. Originally created for my family and friends, our balms and body care products have helped numerous people with sensitive skin, skin ailments, people that can't use commercially produced products, as well as people that are sensitive to fragrance. I love what we have built and I am so excited to continue doing what I love and am passionate about.
