Helping a Hero was formed by three business leaders in League City, Texas. The home program was the brainchild of Meredith Iler and merged with Helping a Hero in 2007 during the filming of Extreme Makeover:Home Edition featuring SSgt Daniel Gilyeat, USMC (Ret). Helping a Hero is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that empowers severely wounded veterans returning from service in the War on Terror. Its primary activity is working with the veteran to design and build a specially adapted home to help military personnel restore their independence. Creating partnerships with the builders, developers, communities, and the veteran are the cornerstones of Helping a Hero’s success. Helping a Hero delivers additional support programs such as marriage retreats, caregiver retreats, recreational activities, BBQ’s, and camraderie. Over the years, Helping a Hero has awarded more than 100 homes to wounded heroes in 22 states.
