The District Communications Group provides full-service communications and strategic planning support to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Rural Health (ORH). ORH strives to increase access for the 3 million Veterans who live in rural communities and use VA health care, many of whom live hours away from the nearest clinic or hospital. Our work covers the spectrum of ORH's communications needs, from creating publications like white papers and newsletters to story-boarding new videos and coordinating nationwide radio announcements. The DC Group regularly assesses opportunities for communications growth and incorporates our deep knowledge of VA to enable ORH to stay at the cutting edge of public engagement and reach targeted partners nationwide. Our team developed ORH's new five-year strategic plan and established ORH’s communications division. Providing subject matter expertise to assist in the design, conduct, and implementation of business process reengineering (BPR) and continuous process improvement (CPI) initiatives to improve DoD business process, including disability evaluation and compensation processes, electronic health records, and information exchanges of personnel, pay, and health treatment data. Provided project management to the Veterans Economic Communities Initiative (VECI) spearheaded by the VA OEO to effect positive economic outcomes for the veteran and transitioning service member populations through community engagement with senior business leaders, civic leaders, government officials, and non-profit organizations. This nationwide program is focused in a total of fifty major metropolitan areas across the United States to promote economic success for Veterans and their families. Program requirements have included campaign plan developments, engagement strategies, maturity models, developing public/private partnerships memorandums of understanding, internal and external strategic communications, change management plan, training and curriculum development for new employees, and hiring best qualified candidates for program implementation and execution.

Acted as senior outreach and public relations specialist and representative for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense / Reserve Affairs (OASD/RA) Yellow Ribbon Program at the state level (Utah) from initiation of the pilot program. Facilitated YRP organizational efforts to build the program’s credibility with the respective services; worked closely with all National Guard and Reserve components, military leadership, service providers, national, regional, state and local organizations, veterans service organizations, along with integrating employment assistance with involvement from groups such as Employment Support for Guard and Reserve and the Chamber of Commerce, to develop a positive and productive joint coalition of the Yellow Ribbon Program Stakeholders to best meet emerging and existing needs of Service Members and their families. Provided OASD/RA Yellow Ribbon Program Management Office analysis, assessment, and detailed evaluation of the Yellow Ribbon Program events in the State of Utah in accordance with guidelines and parameters set forth by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) as well as recommendations in the development of Memorandums of Understanding and Memorandums of Agreement with the components and Services, and other support organizations and agencies.

Provided direct management and oversight of the twenty AW2 Advocates located in the West region of the United States responsible for providing personalized advocacy and support to over 1,000 severely wounded and ill Soldiers and their families. Networked with Army National Guard, US Army Reserve, local non-profit organizations, civic groups, Department of Veterans Affairs, DOD Recovery Care Coordinators, Veterans service organizations, and other government agencies to ensure support and benefits for AW2 Soldiers and families. Supported the AW2 mission and promoted teamwork by facilitating outreach efforts with state and local organizations, developing program partnerships, and providing dedicated support and mentoring to Advocates and team members. Served as first-line regional personnel responsible for initial implementation of Quality Control as part of the Serco contract with the Army Wounded Warrior Program within the West region. Conducted site visits at Army hospitals and VA medical centers to provide supervision, staff development, training to Advocates, and to strengthen local relationships and improve institutional and community awareness of the AW2 program. As an Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) Reservist, I visited and ministered to the staff and patients at Landstuhl Medical Center, Germany, housing troops injured in battle in the Middle East; met arriving aircraft carrying wounded soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan providing immediate ministry of presence and pastoral care. Provided pastoral care to patients suffering from life threatening disease, amputation, and debilitating illness as well as their family membersOffered spiritual, emotional, educational, and career counseling to active duty troops, civilians, and family members. Worked closely with Family Advocacy, social workers, and family support services to ensure complete care for troops and family members. Advised unit commanders on spiritual, moral and religious issues; provided education and spiritual leadership in commanders' meetings and other official events. Traveled throughout Europe to contribute support for geographically separated units. Managed administrative staff in planning and budgeting chapel sponsored events for off-duty military personnel, at times over 800 troops.
