About Meredith Morris

Meredith Ringel Morris is a Principal Scientist and Director for Human-AI Interaction Research with Google Brain (now Google DeepMind). Previously, she was Director of the People + AI Research team at Google. Dr. Morris is also an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington in the School of Computer Science and Engineering and in the Information School. Previously, she was Sr. Principal Researcher and Research Area Manager for Interaction, Accessibility, and Mixed Reality at Microsoft Research. She earned her Sc.B. in computer science from Brown University, and her Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University.Dr. Morris has been named an ACM Fellow and elected to the SIGCHI Academy for her contributions to Human-Computer Interaction. She is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, many of which have been recognized with best paper awards, as well as Lasting Impact Awards from the UIST and ISS conferences. She has served as Technical Program Chair of the CHI, CSCW, ASSETS, and ISS conferences. She is a past member of the TOCHI editorial board and of the CSCW and CHI steering committees. She has been recognized as one of Technology Review’s “35 under 35” for her work on collaborative web search. Dr. Morris is an inventor on 22 U.S. patents.

    I have had an affiliate faculty appointment at the University of Washington since 2008. I have affiliate faculty status in both The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and in The Information School. My appointment was at the Assistant Professor level from 2008 - 2012, the Associate Professor level from 2012 - 2017, and has been at the full Professor level since 2017. In addition to advising doctoral students and conducting joint research with UW faculty, I give frequent guest lectures and occasionally teach full courses. I co-taught INFO463 ("Input & Interaction") in the Information School in 2012, and CS590W ("Accessibility Research Seminar") in the School of Computer Science & Engineering in 2017.

    I am a Sr. Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, where I am Research Area Manager for the Interaction, Accessibility, and Mixed Reality research teams. In the past, I have conducted extensive research on social and collaborative web search as well as on gesture input for tabletop and surface computing systems. I am Research Manager of the Ability team, which conducts research aimed at developing innovative technologies that extend the capabilities of and enhance quality of life for people with disabilities (long-term, temporary, or situational). Our mission is to conduct foundational, user-oriented research to understand the tech-related challenges and needs of people with disabilities, and to invent novel, inclusive technologies with an accessibility-first design philosophy that combine advances in HCI and AI. I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in top-tier HCI conferences and journals, many of which have been recognized with "Best Paper" awards. My research has also been recognized with the "Lasting Impact" awards from the ACM's UIST and Interactive Tabletops & Surfaces conferences, and on Technology Review's "35 under 35" list. I am a member of the TOCHI editorial board and a past member of the ACM CSCW and CHI steering committees. I have served as the Technical Program Chair of the ACM CHI, CSCW, ASSETS, and Interactive Tabletops & Surfaces conferences.
