Travels throughout CORE Donor Service Area (DSA) to over 150 hospitals to evaluate potential donor candidate, remaining on-call 24 hours/7 days a weekThoroughly reviews medical chart on all imminent deaths in CORE’s DSA to determine organ transplant suitabilityWork in conjunction with hospital staff to present rare opportunity for organ donation to the donor family by means of brain death versus donation after cardiac death.Obtains informed authorization and conducts a medical/social history interview from legal next of kin according to the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act (1987) UAGA. Inputs medical information medical information in the UNOS computer network to generate a list of compatible recipients. Effectively communicates with transplant surgeons and coordinators to locate potential organ recipients and relay necessary information with special focus on thoracic organs.Medically manages brain dead donors to maintain normal laboratory and hematology lab values, including but not limited to vasoactive pressor support, inotropes, crystalloids, colloids, blood products and various other medications and medical therapies as needed. Conducts initial physical assessment of organ donor. Collects human tissue specimens for further testing. Coordinates with donor hospital and transplant teams for organ recovery surgery. Assists in the operating room in various roles such as proper packaging and labels of recovered organs for transplant. Ensure that all donor, transplant, and hospital staff follow standards and policies outlined by CORE, UNOS, and donor hospital. Collaborates with members of the health care team to increase donor awareness by developing, supporting, and educating hospital staff.
