About Merideth Spriggs

Currently a Summit Fellow.I Graduated Nazarene Seminary in 2004 with a Masters in Divinity. After serving 13 years as a youth pastor, became homeless in 2008. Once I got back on my feet in 2010, I created Caridad to create education, awareness and assistance for the homeless.Caridad's Mission: "Humanize the Homeless." Caridad's Vision: Caridad’s vision is to end unsheltered homelessness by building modest dignified dwellings. A gardening project for homeless Veterans will help re-integrate Veterans staying in US Vets transitional shelter program back into the work force. Caridad assists homeless by providing case management to homeless clients using a customer service/concierge approach. By restoring homeless back to & living in community. By adapting and changing to the needs of the homeless community in Southern Nevada. By being financially independent.Caridad's Values: Transparency, trust, respect, honor, adaptability, flexibility, capital efficient, competenceCaridad was first created in 2010 as a sock and underwear drive, Undie Sunday, for local homeless charities in San Diego, CA. Since its move to Las Vegas, NV, Caridad has partnered with numerous homeless organizations as well Las Vegas companies. Through a partnership with Clark County, Caridad has been able to conduct the Clark County Community Housing Assessment Tool with clients to prioritize those that need housing immediately; and to ensure homeless clients stay on track. Caridad has become partners with all COC homeless agencies across Clark County. I served our community as the Co-Lead for the Federal 25 Cities Initiative. And in 2015 we ended Veteran Homelessness. In September 2015 I was awarded the Citizen of the Month by the City of Las Vegas. Then in October 2017 I was recognized by People Magazine and the American Heroes Chanel as a finalist for the Red Bandanna Hero Award.     "Humanizing the Homeless." Caridad was created in 2010 to bring socks, underwear and education to those in San Diego County. Caridad partnered with all homeless agencies in San Diego County to donate new socks and underwear to those in need through their Undie Sunday drives. Caridad also helped to educate the general public about fact versus fiction on homeless issues. CaridadSD also spotlighted and partnered with top charities based on Guidestar, Charity Navigator and published financials. Caridad has brought education to San Diego County via written blogs, video blogs, fundraising, educational panels and worked in partnership with the San Diego City Council. In 2014 through a generous donation made by Downtown Project Caridad was able to move from San Diego to Las Vegas. In addition to continuing Undie Sunday drives in Southern Nevada, Caridad has expanded to provide customer service based outreach to homeless. Caridad partners with Nevada Homeless Alliance to promote community and agency collaborations. With the blessing of Clark County Social Services as well as the Las Vegas VA, Caridad has begun coordinating outreach agencies to better service and help homeless get housing. Caridad is committed to transparency. By taking best practices from around the country and partnering with the existing Southern Nevada homeless agencies, Caridad is able to service the clients without duplicating resources. Having studied public speaking for 8 years. I have spoken to groups such as Zappos, youth groups, churches, and even regularly at College of Southern Nevada's Community Health worker class.     Street Outreach coordinator for San Diego. In late January 2013 PATH opened Connections Housing. The project housed 73 homeless in permanent supportive housing and 150 in transitional shelter beds. Working with tax credits through the management of Solari Enterprises we were able to process and get homeless clients into permanent housing once it became available. By partnering with San Diego City Officials, SDPD's HOT, SIP, homeless agency partners, business owners, EMT's and the faith community a top list of chronically homeless was created and the group was housed using 100,000 Homes. Proud to say that many of those featured in the promotional video are former clients.

    The first of its kind in the country the Recuperative Care Unit is a low barriers program partnering with San Diego area hospitals to provide homeless clients a safe place to rest and recover. The RCU partners with hospitals and takes homeless clients recently released from hospitals but not well enough for the streets. Homeless are case managed by RCU staff and the hospitals pay for clients as they continue their care. Clients are assisted in gaining benefits, housing or program placement during their stay. The RCU is now being replicated in other communities as hospitals are recognizing the cost benefit.
