Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital LondonI worked as an assistant psychologist in a respiratory ICU catering to patients in need of mechanical ventilation support and shadowed specialist consultants in the outpatient Motor Neuron Disease clinic. Learnt both theoretical and practical applications of psychology in a health/medical setting by working in an extended multidisciplinary team of healthcare practitioners including specialist consultants, nursing, physios, OTs, SLTs, dieticians.Participated in case formulations and handovers for clinical decision-making, conducted focus group interviews and data analysis and report write-up as part of a psychology service evaluation. Shadowed Clinical psychologist in therapeutic interventions for both patients and carers/family covering adherence to weening, grief and bereavement, adjusting to mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation, burden of chronic disease.

Grateful for this opportunity to volunteer in the dementia ward of UCLH! I will be proactively talking and engaging with the patients in the elderly ward and offering whatever additional support I can.

I interned with the REACH team of the Department of Psychological Medicine. I had the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, clinical, counselling, and educational psychologists, occupational therapists, and social workers. Our team collaborated with public school counsellors in tandem with the Ministry of Education of Singapore for early interventions in community mental health. My responsibilities included attending case triages and case assessments, paper work for case formulation, admin and adhoc tasks. It was an excellent exposure and has built my interpersonal and teamwork skills. I now have a better understanding of mental health services within a public instituition.
