My current role is very varied and requires initiative. As well as excellent literacy and numeracy skills (making use of my proofreading and editing skills in such areas as school reports), it requires good people skills and great team work. This position requires initiative in leading small group work and working one to one with a variety of children, many with special educational needs. My role includes areas such as leading a new playwork framework at the school, managing educational interventions, lifeguarding swimming lessons, leading off-site school trips and being responsible for first aid.

Working with a seven-year-old child at Dulwich College Beijing. His complex needs required weekly input from and coordination with a physiotherapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, members of the school’s Additional Educational Needs Department and external sessions with Applied Behaviour Analysis therapists.

Providing 1:1 practical support (and accompanying administrative work) for a child with a Statement of Special Educational Needs and for whom English was an additional language. Other responsibilities included implementing the school’s phonics scheme, assisting with swimming sessions in the school pool, general administrative work, proofreading, taking part in the school’s working party on Relationships and Sex Education and providing cover for Teaching Assistants in other classes.

As well as helping to set up the UK office for the Chinese law firm of the same name and managing its finances (using Sage and Excel) and administration, as the only native English speaker on the UK team, I had responsibility for writing and editing marketing information, media articles and other forms of communication for both the London office and Yingke’s head office in Beijing.

In addition to regular training, responsibility for issuing and returning books to staff and students and shelving books, checking in academic journals and managing databases and the library’s stationery.

Temporary position as administrator and receptionist.

Together with administrative duties in preparing for the annual Pearl Awards (an awards ceremony sponsored by organisations such as the BBC, the Metropolitan Police, Arup and WSPA – seeking to recognise the talents and achievements of the Chinese community in the UK), which included maintaining the database of contacts, creating and mailing out marketing material, there was writing, editing and chasing up copy for the bimonthly magazine and helping to maintain its website.

Writer and Editor for China’s biggest monthly English language magazine that’s Guangzhou, published by China Intercontinental Press.

Examination Marker and Invigilator for IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Examinations in Chongqing and Guangzhou (PR China); marking up to eight thousand answers a day on the listening and reading papers for the British Council. There was also a temporary position teaching English to the locally engaged staff at the British Council and neighbouring British Consulate-General offices.

Teaching Literature, British Culture and Oral English to classes of forty students. Outside class when not preparing lessons, devising exams or marking homework, there was participation in college events and the regular voicing of language tapes for local academic publishers.

Under the auspices of the Council on International Educational Exchange’s Teach in China programme; teaching large classes Oral English and taking an active role in college events. This also included advising new foreign teachers at induction weeks in Shanghai and Beijing.

Contributing to jacket blurbs, writing advance news sheets and producing mail outs.

English Teacher for Kofu branch of GEOS; a chain of private English schools in Japan. The students were of all ages and English levels. In addition to planning lessons for small classes, attending head office meetings, counselling current students and interviewing prospective ones, there was the organisation of cultural parties and the promotion of GEOS publishing.
