About Merrie D. Heath

"Your work is to discover your work and then with all your heart to give yourself to it."After spending time in workforce/career development and academia, helping others (college students, individuals with disabilities, people from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, high school students, and women living in shelters) connect with employment and, eventually, clearing a path to long term success, I embarked on my journey toward earning a terminal degree so that I, too, do not just talk the talk, but walk my own walk toward my dreams and goals.I have had the great privilege of working in positions where I have been able to touch hearts and change people’s lives. From starting my first business when I was 20 years old to the present time of working with college students at a company that has been dubbed by Time Magazine as the "Harvard of the sky" (July 2, 1979) --- I follow my heart and give it my all. The pandemic brought tough economic circumstances and challenged our emotional, psychological, and social well-being - all of which altered our approach to work, to our careers, and to how we live our lives. I love challenging people to stretch themselves beyond their given circumstances. This is the ‘people’ side of the business. I have also followed the professional plan of ‘working the numbers’ - making the sale; hitting the fundraising goals; placing people into employment; and maximizing outreach to grow the company. It is all part of the business at hand. However, lest we forget... so are dreams, purpose, and destiny. Let’s bring balance and integrity to how we conduct our business by valuing outcomes, but more importantly, by respecting and valuing the foundation of that business - it's people. It is about creating not only a 'brain' economy but a 'heart' economy. As the future of work inspires change, we must explore ways to embrace new workforce strategies and create an economy where successful workers can live comfortably and work effectively with a sense of purpose. Meeting each person where they are at, encouraging a 'brave space' of personal and professional growth, and honoring diversity - we can all learn and grow together for a better world economy.

Google (dictionary) defines the term adviser/advisor - noun - like this: a person who gives advice, typically someone who is expert in a particular field; a teacher or staff counselor who helps a student plan a course of study. Job titles can possess a modicum of truth by definition, leaving room for a considerably larger, more extensive understanding of what the day to day activities in a particular role entails. University advisors do more than assist a student with their class schedule - we are mentors, counselors, cheerleaders, and supporters of our students on multiple levels, working in conjunction with other support services, faculty, career services, campus leadership, Admissions, Records/Bursars office, and so much more to ensure that our students get and stay on a path that is meant for them. Student retention and student satisfaction are major roles as an academic advisor - and the well-being of our students are paramount in our daily routines. In this role at ERAU, I am trained and certified in Appreciative Advising through Florida Atlantic University. What does this mean? It means that I do what the best advisors do - and trust me, we have some of the BEST advisors here at ERAU - we support and serve our students and guide them to their path for success. It is a joy to work with students, helping them figure out which pieces of the puzzle will fit where in their 'big picture' future. "Academic advisors mediate the dissonance between what students expect from the educational environment and what they experience in that environment." ~ Habley, Wes. (1981). 'Academic Advising: Critical Link in Student Retention.' NASPA Journal, 28(4):45-50."Good advising may be the single most underestimated characteristic of a successful college experience." ~ Light, R.J. (2001) Making the most of college. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.NACADA core values: caring, commitment, empowerment, inclusivity, integrity, professionalism, and respect.

"Come to the edge, he said, They said: We are afraid Come to the edge, he said. They came, He pushed them, and they flew." Guillaume Apollinaire From the words above by a French poet, this feels like what happens in Career Services! A College of Aviation Career Services professional at Embry-Riddle, Prescott campus, coaxes the fledgling pilots, aeronautics majors, meteorologists, air traffic controllers and students of aviation business to the edge of their consciousness and then we gently nudge them toward developing their resume, building their networking skills, polishing their professional image, and applying for co-operative education/internships. Before we know it… these very same students are doing it on their own! And in the aviation world the idea of “…and they flew” is very literal!

  • Goodwill Industries
    Director Of Mission Services
    Goodwill Industries Feb 2009 - Nov 2010
Awesome Mission's Team was created in 2009 - exceeded expectations that year and fulfilled our 3-year CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation with flying colors (no recommendations on the part of Mission Services - a few in relation to HR). 2010 brought a year of success in a variety of elements: Mission Services was the ONLY department in the entire organization that had a zero percent (0%) employee turnover (three FTE; one PTE; two AmeriCorps) and mid-year calculations for performance management (per matrix) put the team on board for achieving the majority of measurable performance factors (with the exception of a few items affected by state budget issues and economical factors such as not seeing an increase in state contract income and not seeing a wage increase of employed individuals due to stagnate growth in economy - i.e. businesses were not increasing wages). The ultimate number, by year end 2010, showed that goals for number of persons employed was not only met but was exceeded by 27%. The credit goes to the entire Mission's Team for the success because everyone was committed to working together.Public outreach was at an all-time high in 2009 and in 2010, with Mission Services taking a leadership role in community events such as Project Connect, job fairs, and the creation of employer partnerships that resulted in increased training and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Fostering a happy, motivated, empowered, and educated workforce - focusing on teamwork - was key to the success of Mission Services in 2009 and 2010.
