I worked in the Wai Ora - Healthy Waters Partnerships team. Key elements of the role include, developing integrated watershed management plans, engaging with rural stakeholders (Fonterra, DairyNZ, Fed Farmers, Hort. NZ and NZ Beef + Lamb) on our water management programme and NPS-FM implementation process. Developing a cross-council stream offsetting process. And generally providing expert advice in the fields of freshwater ecology and rural land management.

With the goal of improving water quality in the Mahurangi and Whangateau catchments I am liaising with rural land owners and community groups in the region. We work together to develop sustainable land management practices without compromising farming profitability.

A four year research project funded by North Holland's Water Authority, with the objective of determining the dominant environmental drivers of invertebrate communities in modified agricultural waterways. DUTIES - Project management and supervising MSc students. Running experiments and field sampling campaigns to collect data. Reporting key results to all stakeholders at project meetings. Liaising with other researchers and water managers. Presenting at national and international conferences. Publishing articles in peer reviewed journals and producing a PhD thesis. KEY SKILLS - Time management and problem solving, communication, statistical analysis of experimental and long-term monitoring data, scientific writing.

Based at the Auckland Area Office, I was responsible for developing and overseeing freshwater projects in the Auckland Conservancy. DUTIES - Assessing and processing permits, expert advice on policy decisions (regionally and nationally), monitoring threatened species, identify and managing threats to key populations, public advocacy of freshwater conservation issues. KEY SKILLS - Time management, self direction and motivation, clear communication with public and partner agencies.
