Employed under the support engineering team in Colombo for the Australian ISP whose headquarters are based in Sydney. Tasks included troubleshooting and configuration relating to residential ADSL/ADSL 2+ internet connections, HSPA mobile broadband connections, optical fibre internet connections, hosted services, VoIP services, PSTN services, and Email. Further advanced tasks were associated with corporate SHDSL, Fibre, Ethernet over Copper and Wireless Access services whose access is configured over Cisco Series Routers. Diagnostics and resolution were the chief job priorities – troubleshooting included analysing physical layer issues, WAN IP and server related issues, fault reporting, and remote configuration.

Employed as an RF engineer under teams that conducted drive tests in order to determine the quality of networks according to various key performance indicators; including Received Signal Level, Received Signal Quality, Speech Quality Index, Grade of Service etc. Network evaluation was performed by analyzing log files obtained from the Ericsson TEMS and Anite NEMO tools that were used on drive tests. Reports were prepared according to the information gathered from log file analysis; reasons for network problems as well as potential solutions were highlighted in them. Benchmark drive tests and reports were also prepared for potential new sites, with factors such as site planning, frequency planning, and BTS configuration highlighted in them.

Worked on MSc. Project titled “Performance of a BS-CDMA system with Fractionally Spaced Timing Errors”. Performed a thorough literature review on previous work relating to Block-Spread Code Division Multiple Access (BS-CDMA) systems. Demonstrated comprehensive research capabilities in the application of advanced mobile and wireless technology, information theory and signal processing in order to develop a system model for BS-CDMA that took fractionally spaced timing errors into account. Effectively applied knowledge of linear algebra and statistics in mathematical modelling of the proposed system and demonstrated efficient programming skill in simulating the system using MATLAB software. Mathematical modelling of interference was conducted and frequency domain equalisers and downsampling schemes were derived in order to mitigate error-causing interference. Performance was simulated in different practical situations with and without error control coding, and the system was proven to demonstrate improved performance from previous BS-CDMA systems even in very pessimistic scenarios of timing error among users.

Worked with teams that conducted feasibility studies, planned and implemented multi-purpose Radio Frequency ID (RFID) solutions in hospital and warehouse environments. Was responsible for the layout and placement of antennas at different locations within buildings, making decisions based on RFID signal strength. Deployment of RFID solutions was categorized into two types; solutions that required active and passive RFID devices, distinguished by the fact that active RFID devices periodically transmitted information and thus required a more strategic placement of antennas. Actively demonstrated teamwork skills in obtaining information from fellow employees of various functionality. Also worked with product development for new ideas and concepts relating to RFID.

Participated in corporate presentations and field visits to various departments within the three companies. Learned about the application of important concepts such as organisational structure and modern approaches to corporate strategy and company ethics; especially Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability. Worked with fellow interns in team activities and demonstrated flexibility in being both a team leader and member. Participated in presentation skills, corporate etiquette, teamwork, and communication skills workshops.Worked for Dialog Axiata PLC as a trainee engineer within Dialog Broadband. Worked on product concept development for Dialog Broadband’s upcoming Wi-Fi products, and delivered a new product concept – “Managed Corporate Wi-Fi” - within a month’s deadline. Learned the essentials of communicating and working with various functional departments within Dialog Broadband. Delivered an individual presentation to an audience that included the heads of the three companies.
