Established in 1923, the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at IIT (BHU) is the first of its kind in India and a pioneer in the field of metallurgical engineering. The department celebrated its centenary, marking 100 years of excellence in education, research, and innovation in 2023.Over the past century, the department has grown to offer comprehensive programs, including Bachelor's (B.Tech), Integrated Dual Degree (IDD), Master's (M.Tech), and Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees. The department has been home to several prominent researchers in the field of metallurgy, whose contributions have earned it global recognition. In recognition of its achievements, the department was designated as a Centre of Advanced Study in 1980. In 1982, a National Electron Microscope Facility (NELMIF) was established through a generous grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DST). More recently, in 2016, an Advanced Research Center for Iron and Steel was established with support from the Ministry of Steel.With a rich history and a vast, active alumni network, the department continues to make significant contributions to metallurgical research.
