John Riviere is an “inventrepreneur” and the founder of Metafix Inc.Riviere’s goals have always been to create new opportunities and to invent new solutions to old challenges. When he began Metafix in 1988, it was to solve the challenge of safely disposing of the liquid waste generated through photo-finishing, printing, and similar processes. In 1989, Metafix became the first company to include a micro-processor in its recycling recovery systems, allowing them to write custom software that could gather important data like never before. Realizing the potential of remote monitoring, the company became an early adopter of the web and cloud computing in the 1990s. Data was key to enhancing their systems and services, and the enormous influx of data allowed them to track, predict, and prevent any systems operations that were less than optimal. Metafix has been a leader of the “Internet of Things” since 2003—before it was even a phrase.
