I am the Director of a small management consultancy company supporting public, private and third sector organisations to improve their use of resources, value for money and quality of service. I focus on evaluating and developing corporate governance, corporate strategies, capital programmes and projects, operational business plans and performance management processes. From 2013 to 2019 I was a Capital Project Assessor for the Arts Council of Wales (ACW), supporting the development of capital projects undertaken by arts organisations across Wales. From 2017 to 2019 I was also a Resilience Associate for the ACW, supporting the operational and financial sustainability of its portfolio of arts organisations.

Using narrative practice and analysis, I assist enterprises with improving connectivity of purpose, people and process. I support entities wishing to change their corporate culture or 'personality', helping them to refine their vision and values, to better understand attitudes, and to invite and elicit behavioural change. I run workshops in narrative and creative practice in support of educational programmes and heritage projects. I am particularly interested in narrative interpretation of landscape, archaeology and history, in creating imaginative pathways for connecting people today with each other and with people in the past, and in elucidating 'sense of place' through story.

I am an oral storyteller, creative writer, folk-singer and guitarist, working solo and with Fire Springs storytellers. I draw on material from archaeology, history, folk tradition and contemporary life for narratives that speak to today while looking to the future. Major storytelling performances I have co-produced include 'Arthur's Dream', 'Robin of the Wildwood', 'Voices from the Past', 'Return to Arcadia', 'Dark Age Deeds of the Celtic Saints' and 'A Fair Field Full of Folk'. I have appeared at the Bath Literature Festival, Glastonbury (Green Fields) and the Priddy Folk Fair, and in theatres, arts centres and other venues across the UK. I co-authored 'An Ecobardic Manifesto' (Awen Publications, 2008) which sets out a vision for the arts in an age of global ecological crisis, and wrote a chapter entitled 'Voices in the City' in 'Storytelling for a Greener World: Environment, Community and Story-Based Learning' (Hawthorn Press, 2014), a ground-breaking resource book for people using storytelling in their work, re-issued as 'Storytelling for Nature Connection' (Hawthorn Press, 2022). My short story, 'The Wind Shall Blow', is in 'Ballad Tales: An Anthology of British Ballads Retold' (The History Press, 2017).

Based in Cardiff, my main focus was on improving decision-making processes, capital investment programmes and projects, and asset management arrangements. I also helped the Assembly Government develop good practice in its asset management planning and contributed actively to the work of 'task and finish' groups in the NHS and local government sectors. Particular investigations in which I was involved included 'Sustainable Development and Business Decision Making in the Welsh Assembly Government' (2010), 'The Red Dragon Project' (2009) and 'The Arts Council of Wales: Supporting Major Capital Projects' (2008).

Based in Cardiff, my main focus was on evaluating the management of property and infrastructure assets and assessing the reorganisation of public bodies.

Based in London, I undertook major value for money audits assessing how well UK central government departments used their resources. In particular I examined the Ministry of Defence (1992-98) and the former Department of Health and Social Security (1987-90). For two years (1990-92) I worked on the NAO's central policy unit, supporting the development of the organisation's corporate strategy and undertaking policy analysis. Based primarily in London and Bath, I also undertook secondments to the UN (New York) and the NRA (Bristol) during this time (see below).

Seconded from the NAO to the UN, I led a biennial management audit of the global activities of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This work focused on change management, estate management, cash management and information technology systems. Based in New York, I undertook country visits to Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Peru.

I worked as a field archaeologist under various contracts. Starting as a volunteer digger, I went on to carry out sites and monuments recording work, to conduct field surveys and to supervise several excavations of prehistoric and Roman period sites in the UK. Organisations I worked for included the Dyfed Archaeological Trust, the Scottish Development Department and the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. During this time I also completed undergraduate (BA History) and postgraduate (MPhil Archaeology) degrees.
