About Melissa Watts
Prior to my current position with the Georgia Coastal Health District, I was the Public Information Officer for the Florida Department of Health in Pasco County. I managed all internal and external communications; created and disseminated print, video and web publications; produced and maintained social media and website content; and acted as liaison for all media outlets. Prior to this position, I was employed as an Assignment Editor and Digital Content Producer at WTSP 10 Tampa Bay (formerly 10News).I graduated from the University of South Florida with a master's degree in media studies and a bachelor's degree in video and television production. While completing my master’s degree, I maintained a position in the USF Video Lab as a graduate assistant for the USF Broadcast Engineer. In my previous graduate assistantship, I taught Communication Ethics and was the production manager for Florida Focus, a news break that aired on WUSF. During a hiatus between undergrad and graduate school, I was employed at USF as a video lab assistant and a teaching assistant for Production & Direction and Electronic Field Production.As a student, I directed the Florida Focus Newsbreak that aired daily on WUSF. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I continued working with Florida Focus for three years as the production manager, and I often directed, technical directed, and did audio and graphics for the show. I also helped shoot, edit and produce a 30-minute documentary called 50's Forever: The Lifestyle Lives On, and I co-produced a mini documentary on the City of Oldsmar. Both aired on WUSF.In addition to these projects and others, I completed an internship with Daytime on WFLA-TV as a production assistant, and I worked on The Joy FM Event Staff for six years, assisting with the preparation and organization of concerts, festivals and other events.
