Education: St Michael's Handsworth 1959-61. Cherry Orchard School 1961-5. King Edwards' Birmingham 1965-72. Camp moniteur in France, English teacher in various locations & hotel waiter in Germany 1972-3. Downing College Cambridge 1973-77 (BA Hons Modern & Medieval Languages). New College Oxford University 1977-8 (PGCE). Taught German and French at Whitgift School Croydon 1978-80.In 1981, he switched to the computer industry via HM Government's TOPS programme. Passing the exam in COBOL and systems analysis gained him membership of the British Computer Society. He still has hard copies of those programs! He continues his language work through translation, teaching and conversation. He has worked as a programmer, trainer, coach, technical consultant, project manager and Unicode specialist, on government and commercial projects of varying size and complexity. In 1994, the BCS awarded him chartered status (CITP). In 2005, he won the Institute of Customer Service’s Solutions Award and coached colleagues to this award in the years that followed.Mike has started and led numerous initiatives in his community and church for over 30 years, serving on the committee of BCS Berkshire (his local branch of the Chartered Institute for IT) since 2014, engaging with schools and local charities at Oracle and through the BCS, and since retirement as a volunteer driver and parish visitor, and in local nature conservation.His overriding passion at home and abroad is to speak up for those who are not heard or are defenceless through charities such as CSW, Fairtrade, Tearfund, CCA and SPUC. As a Christian he believes that all life is precious and supports nature conservation through A Rocha, BBOWT, the RSPB and local conservation groups.He is blessed with a wonderful family, owns a red fox labrador and has (for his sins) supported West Bromwich Albion since 1963. https://about.me/mikebuckland/
