I earned my Ph.D. from the School of Journalism and Electronic Media at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2020. In addition, I completed a Qualitative Research Methods certificate in Education. My cognates were Education Psychology/Adult Education and Cultural Studies. Prior to attending UT Knoxville, I earned my M.S. in journalism from UT Knoxville and a B.S. in communications from Austin Peay State University. I have taught courses and/or sessions on racism in the media landscape, graphic design, media writing, photography, and social listening.My research broadly focuses on race, racism, equity, and inclusion in student newsrooms, journalism pedagogy, and the media industry. I explore how to: increase racial diversity in each area, create multicultural media and educational environments, and increase awareness of inequities in these areas. I adopt a critical approach to examine these issues through racially marginalized perspectives. My ultimate goal is to achieve liberation in these areas, help marginalized folk use their voice, and to apply this research to other racial groups.For my dissertation, I explored how racially marginalized journalism students in predominantly White institutional journalism classrooms and student newsrooms make-meaning of their experiences.My master’s project was titled: “Project MOXY: A publication for young women to enhance their professional and personal lives by discussing relatable issues in fashion, health, culture, entertainment, technology, science, travel, politics and business.” It focused on creating a multicultural women’s magazine to promote empowerment, diversity, and inclusion. During my master’s my cognate was information science.For professional experience, I was a writer and graphic designer for The Amplifier, INSPIRER Magazine, Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, Hellion Magazine, The All State, and The Monocle. I have taught courses and sessions in media writing, graphic design, racial ideologies, social monitoring, social listening, and magazine production. Additionally, has created marketing and promotional materials for TSPN, Agency865, Deliverance Outreach Temple Church, and BOBCATSSS.Lastly, I earned my B.S. in communication from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. My concentration was in Print and Web Journalism and a minor in Marketing. I am always ready to learn new skills, travel, experience different cultures, adventures, and food.
