About Michael Frodyma

With over 30 years of microbiology research experience and 20 years in industrial microbiology, I have focused on the field of active microbials - using live bacteria or fungi to sustainably replace traditional chemistries in numerous industrial and agricultural applications. For the last several years my role has been as a senior executive managing manufacturing and process development of agricultural biologicals for row and specialty crops. In particular, I manage the research involved in fermenting and formulating our live bacterial pipeline products as well as overseeing our contract manufacturing operations where we produce commercial materials for sale.Over these years I have grown from a junior scientist managing the day-to-day scientific experiments within a single project, to leading multiple departments, to now sitting on the executive management team as a company Vice President. This professional growth has allowed me to experience multiple sides of an industrial R&D and Process Development machine from the management of project goals, to the development of a global strategic area plan, to full-scale manufacture of microbial products. I have designed programs in microbial discovery, fermentation, application (mode of action studies), formulation/stability, and assay development. I've also managed several research teams working on projects in these areas, either internally, or through collaborations with industrial and academic partners. In my senior management roles, I have budgetary responsibility for the daily operations of the department as well as developmental responsibility for ensuring that my staff is continuing to push the boundaries of what they can undertake scientifically, mentally, and personally. At the end of the day, my most satisfying accomplishments have been in people development – designing and implementing plans for my colleagues to excel at their current position and enable them to be ready for the next position in the future, either within the company or without.

My new role at NewLeaf builds upon my most recent position and adds official responsibility for our fermentation operations, both internally and at our contract manufacturers. I will continue to lead and lease with our contract operators who manufacture our products both at a fermentation level and at our downstream processor to concentrate, formulate and manufacture the final version of our product. I’m now also taking a larger role in the day to day operations for our fermentation development team designing new media for pipeline strains.
  • Newleaf Symbiotics, Inc.
    Director Product Development
Newleaf Symbiotics, Inc. Dec 2017 - Feb 2020
    St. Louis, Missouri, Us
Responsible for new product development of formulations around our pipeline of pink pigmented facultative methylotrophs. Product Development at NLS includes a mix of functions of a larger company including R&D, pilot, and production. There is a heavy linkage between fermentation optimization and formulation recovery and stability. Organisms exiting our discovery pipeline are optimized for their fermentation characteristics and titer, downstream processing and concentration, formulation and final product design.
  • Newleaf Symbiotics, Inc.
    Formulations Manager - Product Development
Newleaf Symbiotics, Inc. Mar 2017 - Dec 2017
    St. Louis, Missouri, Us
At NewLeaf Symbiotics, my role is to develop novel formulations for our pipeline of pink pigmented facultative methylotrophs (PPFMs). These organisms are being developed for use in broad acre agriculture to increase yields of corn, soybean, wheat and other high value crops.
  • Novozymes
Senior Department Manager - Stability Research And Assay Development
    Novozymes Mar 2016 - Jan 2017
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
I lead two departments in Novozymes BioAg: Microbial Assay Development and Microbial Stability Research. Both of these departments are intimately involved in the Alliance efforts to find new microbials for broad acre row crops like corn, soy, wheat and canola. Assay Development helps build the primary and secondary screens of new organisms isolated in Discovery to find microbes that will excel at building yield in the field. Stability Research continues its work to define new strategies to stabilize novel microbes for viable delivery to the farmer.
  • Novozymes
Senior Department Manager - Microbial Formulations
    Novozymes Aug 2015 - Mar 2016
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
Work in Stability Research aims to discover the modes with which we can preserve microbes in agriculturally relevant formulations, either on seed or in materials provided as foliar applications. Our projects are on the front end of the process looking at the very fundamental, physiological reasons why a microbe does or does not survive in liquid or dry formulations.
  • Novozymes
Senior Department Manager - Application Development
    Novozymes Apr 2013 - Aug 2015
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
Managing the technical R&D staff in BioAg at our Roanoke, Virginia area research office. Projects in this group center around biocontrol, bioyield enhancement and biofertility (N and P). A large part of my job is to collaborate and direct the course of major research projects with industrial and academic partners though mentoring of technical project leads. Recently this has also involved managing the Monsanto-Novozymes BioAg Alliance in regards to joint research projects between the two companies. As a senior manager within BioAg, my projects are mostly global with dedicated partners in Agriculture. These technical projects are at both the discovery and developmental levels.Projects run in my group center mostly around biocontrols and biofertility with a focus on nitrogen. Significant work is also around formulations of microorganisms either alone or on-seed, as well as fermentation development. A significant amount of research is in developing effective laboratory scale assays that translate to positive field performance in the form of yield. Currently my group supports both internal/inter-departmental projects as well as supporting joint research projects with external partners or the management of contract research at the university level.
  • Novozymes
    R&D Group Leader
    Novozymes Jun 2010 - Apr 2013
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
Manage the technical R&D staff of the research station in Saskatoon, SK relating to BioAg research in biocontrol, bio-yield enhancement and biofertility. Project lead on pipeline projects critical to success of Novozymes BioAg, Ltd. Project focus in Canada was on biofertilitry in regards to phosphate solubilisation as well as biofungicides.
  • Novozymes
    Senior Scientist Ii
    Novozymes Aug 2008 - Jun 2010
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
Biotechnology company focusing on microbiological solutions and alternatives to current institutional and household, industrial wastewater, and plant care industries. A promotion from Senior Scientist I below, but still continuing to work on the same projects and concepts described there.
  • Novozymes
    Senior Scientist I
    Novozymes Aug 2003 - Aug 2008
    Bagsvaerd, Dk
Biotechnology company focusing on microbiological solutions and alternatives to current institutional and household, industrial wastewater, and plant care industries. My work as a senior scientist was bench work regarding the isolation and characterization of new microorganisms that would have potential roles in cleaning products. For example, the isolation of amylase and protease producing Bacillus strains for inclusion in carpet cleaning products that would help to supplement the "green" surfactants already in the formulation. Much of my work here was also in understanding the phylogeny of the organisms in the Novozymes culture collection, and characterizing them taxonomically. Finding new diversity in bacterial isolates has always been one of our strengths, and work by my group contributed to this collection.
  • Brevard Community College
    Associate Professor
Brevard Community College Aug 2001 - Aug 2002
    New York, Us
Taught introductory biology as a lecture and laboratory course. As an associate professor my role here was to teach an evening class to returning students, adults, and others who were completing their degrees after some level of hiatus from high school. The most rewarding part of this position was that all of the students were much more motivated to learn than say for example, freshman students at a university who are attending school directly out of high school and don't know what they want to do, or why they want to do it. I was responsible for content, lectures, testing, and laboratory experiments within the confines of the overall scope of an introductory biology class. I taught 3 semesters here before leaving to take a post-doctoral position in Pennsylvania.
  • Boulder'S Climbing Gym
    Climbing Instructor
    Boulder'S Climbing Gym Jan 1995 - Jan 1998
Instructor at indoor rock climbing gym. Worked with the staff to manage training schedules and teach introductory courses to the public. Also managed the gym when the owners were not there. This job kindled my passion for the outdoors, and was much more a pleasure than actually working! I worked here part time while continuing my doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
