Manager, Combustion Glass Team

Philadelphia, Pa, Us

Principal Research Engineer

Allentown, Pennsylvania Area

- Developed sensor-based process optimization systems for applications including metals production/processing, glass manufacturing, and food freezing. - Managed the development of a cloud-based data portal for live sensor data viewing, alerting, and analytics. - Developed new models and algorithms using aggregated sensor data to optimize customer processes- Contributing author on three patent applications- Safety lead for applications R&D team

Project Element Lead/Process Engineer

National Energy Technology Laboratory, U.S. Department Of Energy, Morgantown, Wv

• Managed and coordinated communication and data transfer between computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelers and experimental researchers. Assisted in the development of multi-phase fluid dynamic models of chemical looping combustion processes and validation of the models using lab-generated experimental data. • Developed a process model for an experimental chemical looping combustion reactor which includes a thermodynamic equilibrium solver and one-dimensional heat loss and pressure loss calculations.• Developed a reactor sizing model to evaluate and recommend new design options for scale-up of laboratory systems to industrial levels. Supported a business development team by identifying and evaluating new commercial applications to improve the techno-economic feasibility of chemical looping. • Managed a $1.1M budget, created project scope and schedule, estimated material and labor costs for subcontract work. Provided technical work direction for researchers and craft labor technicians.• Provided engineering support for start-up and operation of a 50 kilowatt prototype chemical looping combustion reactor.• Investigated catalyst attrition using various testing methods and quantified results using particle size analysis methods. Recommended new materials and preparation methods to improve catalyst lifetimes. Additional Accomplishments• Selected by URS management for a special, high-priority assignment to review experimental and model validation plans for the U.S. DOE Hanford Nuclear Waste Treatment Plant. Effort resulted in an exclusive invitation to submit a proposal to oversee all future waste treatment vessel design verification test plans. Individually recognized twice for outstanding technical contributions to this project. • Fostered two collaborative research projects with the Physics and Chemistry Departments at West Virginia University and co-wrote two proposals for external funding.

Sep 2011 - Sep 2013

Research Engineer

National Energy Technology Laboratory, U.S. Department Of Energy, Morgantown, Wv

• Principal Investigator for several research projects involving catalytic enhancement of chemical processes using the following advanced technologies: 1.) Non-equilibrium plasmas - for synthesis gas production and carbon dioxide dissociation and conversion to value-added chemicals. 2.) Radio-frequency and Microwave Dielectric Heating - for coal and biomass gasification and diesel partial oxidation and combustion. • Also conducted experimentation and data analysis on catalytic synthesis of higher alcohol (ethanol, butanol) fuels. • Directed researchers and technicians, reviewed progress and results, and created technical scope of work and project schedules.

Oct 2009 - Sep 2013

Phd. Candidate

• Designed, built, and tested plasma-chemical reactors for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) and the U.S. Department of Energy. Reactors were capable of reforming heavy hydrocarbon fuels (diesel, JP-8) into synthesis gas with high efficiency. • Worked on a team with industrial and academic partners to merge plasma reactors with a solid oxide fuel cell to create a compact, vehicular auxiliary power unit. Additional experience gained:• Designed and tested a novel system to convert powdered biomass into synthesis gas using gliding arc plasma. The system was patented. • Constructed thermodynamic equilibrium and process model simulations of reacting flow systems using HSC Chemistry,Visual basic, and Microsoft Excel.

Sep 2005 - Feb 2010

Masters-Level Research Assistant

• Developed an anti-terrorism emergency plasma air cleaning system to destroy high concentrations of airborne microorganisms inside a commercial-scale heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. This system was capable of achieving a rapid 5-log reduction (99.999%) of high concentrations of airborne microorganisms that could appear as the result of a bio-terrorist attack. • The system was patented and the Canadian Department of National Defense licensed the technology for further development. Additional experience gained: • Initiated a plasma-based water sterilization project and mentored a senior design team that won first place in Drexel Engineering Senior Design Competition. • Worked in conjunction with researchers at Drexel's Biomedical Engineering School to successfully destroy anthrax spores on surfaces using DBD plasma.

Sep 2003 - Sep 2005

Project Engineer

Milligan And Company

Philadelphia, Pa

• Monitored distribution of capital investment funds to community expansion and economic growth projects throughout Pennsylvania.

Jul 2002 - Jun 2003

Engineering Inspector

U.S. Engineering Labs

Broomall, Pa

• Performed engineering field inspections on welds of large steel support beams. Utilized blueprints, site plans, and architectural drawings to track defects and repairs in steel structures.

Nov 2001 - Jul 2002

Systems Analyst

• Utilized business process re-engineering techniques and software to increase worker efficiency at various client sites. Acted as a technical liaison to convey client wants/needs to senior-level consultants and team leaders.
