About Mariana G. Domingos

Mariana G. Domingos is a Lead Researcher at STAR Institute - Science Technology Applied Research. She possess expertise in chemical engineering, r&d, fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, modeling and 15 more skills. She is proficient in French and English. Colleagues describe her as "I know Mariana from University times and the best way to resume her is by saying “There are not many people like Mariana!”. She was the best student of her class and always had time to explain to the most unfortunate ones how to solve a problem. She is hardworking, intelligent, sociable and dynamic. She is extremely competent, professional and has an amazing team spirit. I would recommend her without having to think twice!" and "Mariana is one of the most inteligent person i know. She is a very methodical and careful person at work. It is a pleasure working with her."

Turbulent plumes and thermals with internal buoyancy changesThe thesis develops the fundamental knowledge required to understand the fluid dynamics of an accidental fluid release in the ocean or the atmosphere. Such a release would involve the buoyant motion of a mass, in the form of a plume or thermal, and mixing and reaction with seawater/air. The work consists of (i) an analytical part, using scaling and perturbation techniques; (ii) a numerical component, involving the integration of the conservation equations; (iii) experimental part, where new experiments involving turbulent thermals with chemical reaction were performed. Similarity between the laboratory and the oceanic/atmospheric scales of motion are identified. The findings were applied to major global incidents including an accidental release of methane in the Gulf of Mexico, an accidental release of carbon dioxide in the Norwegian Sea and a radioactive cloud in Fukushima.
