Using Matlab scripts, I acquired signaling data from live neurons submitted to stimuli such as insulin, tumor necrosis factor alpha and GABA. I reduced and analyzed the big data amounts using Matlab scripts and tested the significance of the effects using R. The overall aim of the project was to investigate the effects of insulin and its receptor in neurons of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory and learning.

Using python, I mined the Neandertal genome that was being sequenced, looking for recently evolved human proteins. I then characterized biochemically a group of changes on the modern human lineage and analyzed their significance using mixed linear models in R. My conclusion, in line with much recent evidence, is that Neandertals may have been phenotypically very similar to modern humans.

My work was dedicated to characterizing the effects of dimerization of the beta-amyloid precursor protein, which is implicated in Alzheimer's Disease, in living neuron-like cells. At the same time, I collaborated in various projects involving an advanced Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging microscope. These projects involved data acquisition and analysis with Matlab.
