The DKG was founded in 1951 with the purpose of establishing contacts between Canadian soldiers and German families who were stationed in Hanover at the time. A few years later, the working student program, WSP for short, was initiated and brought to life by the DKG president Theanolte Bähnisch. In 1965, 26 German students traveled to Canada for the first time. Already the previous year, 143 Canadian students had come to Germany to work for two months and to explore the country for one month. Youth Promotion and Support: One focus of our work is the promotion of youth. In cooperation with the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and our long-standing partners in Canada, we have been organizing a very successful Work & Travel Program for German students since 1964. As a specialist with Canada as our sole focus, we are one of the most experienced providers on the market. So far, nearly 3,000 students have successfully participated in the DKG's Work & Travel Program and have gained their first international experience with the Summer Job. Numerous graduates are now successful in their careers and consider their stay in Canada a milestone in their biography. Many are still part of the German-Canadian network. In addition, we organize an internship program that offers a limited number of above-average students with leadership potential the opportunity to gain study-related work experience during a qualified internship abroad in Canada. For this purpose, DKG cooperates with well-known companies and institutions located in Canada that are interested in getting to know the excellent young professionals in practice at an early stage.
