Senior Member Of Couchsurfing Member Dispute And Safety Team
Online
I volunteered for the Couchsurfing project in many ways throughout the time I was an active member of the project. I was a city ambassador of Oslo, a country ambassador for Norway and a global ambassador. As a global ambassador, I was a member of the CUQ (Contact us Questions) team and towards the end of 2007, I was invited to join the Member Dispute and Safety Team (MDST). MDST was a tiny team within the Contact Us Questions Team (CUQ), consisting of 6 members, handling all disputes and complaints sent to the Contact Us Team. The team was by invitation only and, even as Couchsurfing approached 2 million members, only had 14 members at the most.MDST handled everything from relatively easy tasks, such as complaints of references left on a profile, accusations of abuse, theft, threats, robbery and rape. We handled police reports, parents or friends reporting that their friends were missing, or dead, and we memorialized the profiles of deceased members. We handled members whose user profile had been hacked, members creating multiple profiles, scammers and phishing attempts. We handled cultural misunderstandings and language barriers and anything where a user’s safety had been threatened. We worked on conflict mediation, solving disputes, giving advice on how to stay safe for solo travellers, wrote policies for the team and gave advice on cultural awareness. I also trained new members to the team. Many of the members that contacted us did not know English at all or their level of English knowledge was poor. A huge part of the communication training that we received (and gave to new members) consisted of how to handle the communication with members via online communication across culture and lingual barriers.Work Language: English / Spanish / Norwegian
