Social Work InternSouth Carolina Department Of Juvenile Justice Aug 2015 - May 2016Columbia, ScAs a social work intern at SCDJJ Detention Center, I was responsible for maintaining a caseload of five or more juveniles at all times. With those juveniles, I was responsible for conducting weekly sessions with them individually. I engaged the helping process to assess and meet their needs during their detainment. Through engagement with the client and the use of supervision, I determine which theory to base intervention from, generally using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Behavior Modification, and other intervention techniques. I engaged the clients in goal setting and created individualized case plans with corresponding tasks and objectives to ensure progression toward respective goals. I was also responsible for clinical contacts and some assessments with other juveniles when necessary. I was also responsible for conducting weekly group sessions with juveniles that focused on life skills, behavior modification techniques, and other relevant skills and topics. -
Student Support SpecialistCommunities In Schools Of Forsyth County Aug 2014 - May 2015Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina AreaStudent Support Specialist connects students and their families to critical community resources that are tailored to their needs. This Specialist also provides students with a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult; a safe place to learn and grow; a healthy start and future; a marketable skill to use upon graduation; and a chance to give back to peers and the community. They accomplish this by working with a site team (principal, counselor, social workers, and teachers) to develop a comprehensive site plan. The plan includes services that address identified school-wide needs, or build and reinforce student assets. It also identifies services for specific students at high risk of eventually dropping out of school. This combination of services ensures that students are getting the academic and personal support they need to stay in school and achieve in life. The Student Support Specialist provides holistic services within the school day and in the community to both the child and his or her family. As a Student Support Specialist at Carver High School in Winston-Salem, I was responsible for maintaining a caseload of 15-20 students and meeting with them individually weekly or bi-weekly depending on their respective needs. I engaged the helping process to determine what specific needs each student had in order to ensure they would graduate high school and achieve in life. These needs ranged from basic needs for their families like food and shelter to academic needs like tutoring and other academic enrichment to mental health needs like counseling and mental health assessment. I was responsible for connecting students to resources that partnered with the organization as well as finding resources available to them to meet their needs. I also engaged each client in goal-setting and created individualized case plans with corresponding objectives to ensure progression toward said goals.
