About Matt Howitt

I have worked at growing technology companies in a variety of product development roles for my entire career. I work in organizations that are growing because growth creates new opportunities and new challenges -- for the company, for the organization, for the people and for me. Growth is fun.I am fundamentally a builder; someone who loves to develop products, markets, strategy, organizations, people and culture. While I love thinking about the next great product and I can still code, in recent years I have spent most of my time building great organizations, great people and great cultures that create great business results. I'm proud of the organizations, people and cultures that I help create.I am very results-oriented. On my watch, great people are hired and/or developed, innovative and market-beating products are built, customers are delighted and business results are achieved. I make it happen with a combination of vision, business savvy, technical skills, organizational know-how, entrepreneurial drive and force of personality. There is nothing more satisfying than getting results.I want to win. Winning is creating innovative products and services, growing audience and audience engagement, growing the top line and the bottom line, and helping everyone around me advance. I am passionate about what I do and I go full speed every day. Did I mention that I want to win?I believe in hiring great people. People who are motivated, people who are passionate, people who want to deliver. I want the people who I work with to know that they are good but I also want them to improve. I want them to be satisfied but still hungry. I want to help them getter better, and I want to get better too.I founded Profound Commerce in 2019 to pursue the incredible opportunity of e-commerce. Prior to Profound Commerce, I worked at five companies: pcOrder (subsidiary of Trilogy), MessageOne, Lombardi Software, RetailMeNot and Convey. As of September 2021, all five of these companies have had successful exits (2 IPOs and 3 acquisitions).

    Profound Commerce Aug 2018 - Apr 2024
    Austin, Tx, Us
Profound Commerce is a brand holding company that profitably operates and grows consumer brands. I founded the company in August 2018, raised over $50mm in institutional capital, acquired 15 e-commerce businesses and hired 70 people globally. We sold Profound Commerce to The Ambr Group in February 2024.
  • Convey Inc
    Vice President, Product
    Convey Inc Sep 2016 - Jun 2019
    Austin, Texas, Us
Convey is a software company that built a supply chain/final mile platform for retailers. I ran Product and UX, and spent lots of time on the road with Chris Richter and Rob Taylor trying to figure out what we were going to be when we grew up. Convey was acquired by project44 in September 2021.
  • Retailmenot, Inc.
    Senior Vice President, Product
    Retailmenot, Inc. Apr 2015 - Jun 2016
    Austin, Tx, Us
Transitioned from Eng to Product in spring 2015 to finally get to the "business side" after 18 years as a professional technologist. RetailMeNot went private again a year after I left, acquired by Harland Clarke. Subsequently RMN was acquired by J2 Global, which split in two and renamed itself Ziff Davis. I was long gone when all of that happened.
  • Retailmenot, Inc.
    Senior Vice President, Engineering
    Retailmenot, Inc. Jan 2013 - Apr 2015
    Austin, Tx, Us
Promoted to SVP from VP in January 2013. I was the head of engineering when RMN went public in July 2013.
  • Retailmenot, Inc.
    Vice President, Engineering
    Retailmenot, Inc. Oct 2011 - Dec 2012

I joined RetailMeNot (then Whale Shark Media) as VP of Engineering shortly after it had completed its acquisition of RetailMeNot.com but before it had raised its growth equity round. I was hired to significantly up level the talent, team size and organization of the Engineering team.
  • Ibm
    Bpm Development
    Ibm Feb 2010 - Oct 2011
    Armonk, New York, Ny, Us
At IBM by way of its acquisition of Lombardi, I was one of three people who drove the effort to revamp the BPM development team with the explicit goal of turning it into a group that could deliver great results, i.e. products that had coherent value propositions, created real business value, were usable and actually worked. In concert with a small, hand-picked team of heritage IBMers and Lombardos, I completely revamped the group's governance, processes and tooling. Through high standards and a focus on "real" results (e.g. shipping product, revenue growth, profitability, customer acquisition, customer satisfaction), I also dramatically impacted the culture. On the human front, I worked hard to recognize and reward top performers, weed out bad people and optimize the human resources of a 450-person software development organization. The result of this effort was two-fold: a dramatically more capable organization and IBM Business Process Manager, the leading product in the BPM market. IBM BPM marries the ease-of-use and business-user-centric approach of Lombardi with the hard core transaction processing capabilities and scale of IBM. IBM BPM is now one of the fastest growing products in the IBM Software portfolio, growing at more than 25% per year off a multi-hundred million dollar revenue base. In the words of one heritage IBMer, cribbing from Lou Gerstner, I made "the elephant dance" in a way that he had never seen in his 20-year career at IBM. It definitely was a team effort, but I was one of a few people who made it happen.
  • Lombardi Software
    Vice President, Product Engineering
    Lombardi Software May 2007 - Jan 2010

  • Lombardi Software
    Director, Engineering
    Lombardi Software Nov 2004 - May 2007

As director of engineering, I scaled the organization from 10 people in the U.S. and 4 people in Ukraine to 22 people in the U.S. and 20 in Ukraine. I was promoted out of this position to Vice President, Product Engineering.
