As this year of personal development starts drawing to a close, I am finishing my focus on enhancing my technical skills in DevOps and cybersecurity. With the job search dragging on through the Summer months. I decided to start writing again. I was inspired by my teenage cousin who has an ambition to be a writer. I also thought I might get into Copywriting on the side. It all started with my poem “Unleash Your Best Imaginary Friend.” One can read the poem my website. It’s my first creative writing in ten years. It was received well at my local Poetry reading hosted by the Bloomington Writer’s Guild. Also, this is not to say that I haven’t been quite creative in my engineering of various software and electrical projects over the years.Spending almost half the day writing felt like releasing a pressure that had been building up inside me for years. I created many other poems at this time. It was surprising to me how algorithmic the writing process could be.I didn’t have much time and I had a lot of ideas so I adopted a pulp fiction process and style. Write it, Edit it once, and ship it. I did this because I can be a perfectionist. It helps to stave off the writer’s block that this brings. It was challenging composing outlines for the short stories that I would love to see published in the coming years. I also created the theme for the set of short stories that I want to combine into a book in the future.Professionally, I feel that structuring this anthem of short stories has helped me. I have a deeper ability to look at the big picture while writing details now. This is important for any engineering task. A piece of writing is not unlike the architecture of a piece of software. Writing is a key skill, whether it’s laying the use cases of an app or communicating the value of a software change in git. Personally, this effort has deepened my connection with the written word. It’s improved my clarity in writing. The conciseness of my work is better as well. So, while I am still looking for the right job, I do want to continue writing. This is because it will enhance my intellect and career.

After building software for ten years, I wanted to plan and create the context of the quality of a physical product. I started by applying my quality management skills to the design of a “triple” greenhouse. That is a green-colored and ecologically efficient greenhouse to be built in the future. The process of building the greenhouse is not unlike a set of instructions for a processor. Each instruction set needs tests to determine the quality. The process already has me thinking about quality in new ways.My property in rural Indiana proved to be an excellent place to build. Building with local materials was going to be the number one efficiency as all of the carbon released by the transportation of the materials needed to be offset. Materials were selected such that their chemistry would capture carbon. The plants inside the greenhouse will capture carbon over time. For electricity, a windmill for powering tools and for heating the building is to be used. For water, insertion of the greenhouse into the water cycle through rain collection and release is used. The skills used for the design were similar to programming a computer at a high level. More time is going to be needed to research and design the low-level details of producing the parts of the greenhouse and the techniques to integrate them. The art and science of the parts are already known and applied elsewhere. For instance, the Aircrete used in the Northern wall will require practice to produce, but other structures have made use of it to great effect.Now that the design is ready to inform a future build. The execution is still going to require building everything to the standard of quality. Such as the usefulness of the building as a greenhouse and its ecologically efficient design. Also, the build might need to change as unplanned events take place. I timed events in the build process to shorten the build schedule. As there would only be one team of builders, everything is to be made sequentially.

• Wrote BDD style acceptance tests for Jumpcloud's LDAP offering; testing the service until the launch of the MVP. • Created test plans for the platform team that resulted in product validation. • Performed tests which resulted in bugs found before the product releases. • Trained QA team members in automation techniques; so I could be placed on the Data Engineering team. • While we dismantled a monolithic piece of code, aided team in testing broken out components; LDAP and system data, for customer devices. • Moved to Data Engineering team with the system data offering; resulting in knowledge transfer and validation of new code. • Trained Data Engineering team on QA techniques and procedures that resulted in the team pairing off and testing their code. • While on Data Engineering team I operated as the only quality advisor on the team resulting in the creation of standards for developers creating tests. • Created framework for data validation resulting in faster test creation. • Used Airflow operators to create templates of automation tests for Jumpcloud’s data pipeline which provided faster test production. • Used DataDog extensively to monitor and find performance issues. • Created and tested more micro services resulting in more agile production.

• Used python to implement scripts for system tests resulting in regression tests that revealed some flaws in the product. • Identified the source of errors from Kubernetes pod outages resulting in missing M3U8 data resulting in fixing the configuration. • Another, more difficult, bug involved intermittently missing metadata which was fixed using information from one of my scripts. • Tested restful API using scripts that verified station ids returned an expected status code resulting in scripts that were used to as regression tests.

• Extensive manual testing according to the player platform team’s test plan resulting in robust code. • Gained familiarity and grasped how to further automate the testing process allowing me to shift from QA to SDET role. • Wrote and developed Android wrapper for an Automated Test environment creating API controller for devices. • Created an IR control for Set Top boxes; 2X less expensive than competition. • Temporary scrum master of a growing team of engineers reached minimum viable product in 4 sprints. • Wrote a proxy server that validates data sent by the player platform team. • Wrote scripts initializing the Android player and tests on devices using API. • Implemented reverse tethering service for network where WiFi was used as a control plane allowing OTG USB to be used as the data plane for devices. • Created a service allowing devices to report data to qTest implementation. • Extended the service to include a Prometheus monitoring back end. • Used Prometheus python to create our own unique programmatic handles in the service. • Extended the service to include a Grafana front end dashboard for the Prometheus and other data. • Used Docker allowing fast deployment and versioning of the service. • Service had core dump feature for information including python threads.

• Designed Selenium tests for the CMS (Configuration) for an Android based Wi-Fi phone system the result was a test plan left with the engineering team. • Started to develop a personal interest in BDD particularly Cucumber wrote a GUI using BDD principles.

• Solving software problems from around the globe in a competitive marketplace I was able to satisfy my customers software needs. • Designing an Android mobile phone app to categorize a user’s movements I created an innovative pedometer and push-up counter. • Implemented the Flipboard library for a client’s Android app: creating the page flipping animation • Sliced new user interfaces onto a client’s Android app to match the UI design for an app that was released on the play store. • Created a front-end Kotlin based UI for my own open source software which I maintain for the purpose of my education.

• Automated QA testing with Selenium which created their first automated tests. • Used Cucumber BDD to create an Oauth implementation on Google App Engine. • Used Django and Jinja2 with Google App Engine on the Google Cloud Platform to store important data securely as a backup during a data migration. • Used Bootstrap to create HTML5 and CSS for the website. I matched previous styles while updating the layout so that it displayed on small screen devices. • Architect of a mock Data Handler that authenticated with App Engine API this allowed better testing and mocking of important parts of the server. • Maintained projects in Python2 and used Python3 for new development I was an early advocate for trans-piling to Python3 as Python2 reached end of life. • Employed git to collaborate in an agile environment with two sometimes three other developers. This led to communication and checks of pull-requests.

• Automated 30% of my workload in the first week of the contract, this increased work quality and speed. • Eliminated manual labor by scripting bulk document downloads with Python. This was the first time the downloads had been downloaded via a script. • Writing Excel macros, and using Powershell to change file data resulted in the storage of files in an informal database that allowed the avoidance of repetitive work.
