We are in the healthcare profession for the people. I am currently undertaking first year study in a Bachelor of Dental Health Science at Griffith University with the intention of becoming a dentist. Through and through, I am a people person. I love speaking to people. I love finding out their interests. I love hearing about their lives. Most of my experience is in people-centred and particularly child-centred volunteer work. These various volunteering avenues have shown me the joy i find making connections, helping people and have truely enhanced my interpersonal skills such as communication, empathy and negotiation. Additionally, the experiences allowed me to have a far deeper understanding of various cultures, socioeconomic positions and differences in people's pasts. Furthermore, this volunteer work came with a certain amount of responsibility, teamwork and leadership, augmenting my skills in organization, time management, delegation and attention to detail. - Communication: through the Modified Rugby Program I learnt communication as the child I was paired with was non-verbal. This has made me particularly tuned into non-verbal communication which is vital in a healthcare setting where people may not always feel comfortable communicating with words.- Empathy: volunteer work has really enhanced my empathy skills as i have been forced to put myself in the situation of many disadvantaged people. This is a vital skill in healthcare as people are often struggling and want to be understood. - Responsibility: through volunteering with the Lighthouse Toowoomba I learnt responsibility as I was responsible for a teaching and encouraging group of young children and it was up to me to guide and look after them. Understanding responsibility is vital in a healthcare setting as each practitioner has a responsibility over the patient.My greatest career objective is to make a positive impact on people and i believe that healthcare and specifically dentistry is the industry for that. I thrive all interpersonal skills and feel natural and comfortable in interactive situations. I am an excellent communicator, I have a deep understanding of how people think and I display empathy and compassion easily. Nevertheless, I am also deeply efficient, diligent, focused and particular in my practices.In an industry so geared toward people, my natural aptitude and genuine love for people is the most valuable thing I can bring to a dental workplace.
