I work in the Schmitz Lab that focuses on microbiology and pathology. My goal is to characterize wild-type E. coli strains based on how efficiently their genetics can be modified for further research purposes.

I work with the research and dissemination team to decipher the latest research in the psychological science fields. I help create the Research Connection Newsletters sent out by the company by summarizing the publications of the most current studies. The Research Connection Newsletters’ goal is to get the entire community to understand the latest trends in mental health research and spread awareness about medical improvements.

My goal is to spread awareness about suicide prevention and end the stigma and judgement towards those who die by suicide. Through the Melanie Simon Memorial Fund set up at AFSP, I have raised over $37,000 through the efforts of over 350 donors. The donations are allocated respectively: 25% to the South Florida chapter, 25% to the Nashville chapter, and 50% to the national chapter to be used for psychiatric disorder research.

I apply for funding from the National Active Minds Chapter. I host at least one school-wide fundraiser per semester at Vanderbilt University. I reach out to sponsors for events and keep track of the budget for the organization.

I host and raise funds for the “Out of the Darkness” walk sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I reach out to organizations and companies to sponsor this event. I coordinate events for students to boost morale while educating about mental illnesses.

I work in the operating room alongside the pediatric anesthesiologist and surgeons. I observe and assist doctors with surgeries, such as preparing materials needed during the procedure and turning over rooms after the procedure has successfully completed. Some of the most fascinating procedures that I have shadowed are neurosurgery, robotic laparoscopic liver transplants, and open heart surgery. I hope this is an opportunity for me to grow interest in one particular medical specialty.

I worked alongside doctors and nurses in the infirmary of an adolescents summer camp. My roles consisted of cleaning wounds, taking vitals and prepping materials for the doctors.

I ran the STEM program at a summer camp and taught children basic coding skills and science experiments. I was responsible for several teenage girls needs throughout the day.

I observed physician-patient interactions and medical procedures. I learned how to analyze MRIs and X-Rays of the spine and other structures before and after surgeries.

At this smoothie bar, I was responsible for making menu items, serving customers, and operating the payment terminals. I was also in charge of opening and closing the store and training newly hired employees.
