Mia Tretta was a 15-year-old high school freshman when she and four other students were shot by a classmate in 2019. Since then, Mia has become a powerful and vocal advocate for meaningful gun violence prevention and mental health change, aligning with various grassroots organizations such as Brady’s Team Enough, Everytown for Gun Safety, Students Demand Action, and Sandy Hook Promise. Her advocacy took her to speak at the White House, where she spoke on behalf of herself and other gun-violence survivors while introducing President Joe Biden at his 2022 Federal Ghost Gun Regulation Announcement. Mia has been a frequent asset of Governor Gavin Newsom and other California state legislators working on initiatives to stop gun violence. Mia has also been a guest/featured speaker at the Milken Institute in 2023 and most recently at South by Southwest 2024. Mia works for the federal government as an intern for the ATF, where she was previously the first student intern to ever work directly for Director Steven Dettelbach. She also interns for Providence Holy Cross Hospital's health education program. Mia also stays true to her community-based activism, where she continues to serve as the Students Demand Action leader for Brown University, where she is currently a freshman.
