I am motivated by the idea that data-driven understandings of human behavior, systems, and society can be ethically applied to make people's lives better. During the first stage of my career as a behavioral neuroscience researcher at the National Institutes of Health, I was exposed to the outstanding potential of big data and advanced analytics in the healthcare sector to improve patient outcomes and increase equity, efficiency, and innovation. I honed my technical skills and transitioned to working as a Data Scientist in the tech industry in order to pursue these types of projects.It only took a few months as a data scientist to realize that having sound analytics is only part of a good data science solution. Analytics must be integrated into production systems in order to deliver solutions to the people who need them. I got serious about implementing MLOps and setting up frameworks for development, testing, deployment, and management of model services in production. This means understanding every layer of the tech stack, from databases to user experience, and how data science solutions interact with each. I am passionate about collaboration and believe it’s necessary to work alongside developers of all expert areas to implement the best data science solutions. I am driven to continue learning and broadening my software development skills alongside my data science skills. I believe a strong understanding of software development makes me a better data scientist because I often don’t have to rely on developers to implement my solutions. I am always looking for new synergies between the data science and software development workflows and am angling my course of study in my MS in analytics to include solid understandings of algorithmic efficiency and systems engineering so that these concepts are integrated into my analytics work on a core level.
