Well-planned, measurable progress drives me. I love everything about identifying and planning a goal, then celebrating the progress and end-result. But where I really shine is overcoming the challenges along the way! Thankfully, I found that the construction industry featured each of these aspects: project planning usually begins years in advance, progress is constantly measured (visually, digitally, and financially), and innumerable problems threaten progress at each turn. The opportunity to solve those problems prompted me to become an engineer and immediately move to a $30 billion green-field liquefied natural gas project in remote Western Australia. Because this jobsite was literally a world away from its Houston-based designers, my primary role was to efficiently and effectively address constructability issues—or risk delay costs climbing into the millions. And I thrived under the high pressure! After two years abroad, I returned to Houston and refocused my passion for construction and problem solving to renovating elementary and secondary schools. Each summer, I had eight weeks to completely gut and rebuild entire schools. Planning and problem solving were imperative. There was no other option; no temporary facilities nor penalties could buy more time. The students were returning each August, regardless of whatever issues we encountered. And each summer, my projects seemingly accomplished more work in less time, totaling over $190 million in work over seven years.Throughout my construction career, projects undoubtedly progressed most smoothly when the problem solvers could focus their energy on the work front. Unfortunately, each time a project encountered a high-stake legal issue—a time when direction and progress are most critical—attorneys would bog the problem solvers’ time and focus. Brilliant lawyers they may be, their strained industry vocabulary and shiny shoes revealed their minimal “boots on the ground” experience. I knew I could be different. With a law degree and my industry experience, I could be a problem solver .:for the problem solvers:. So I went to law school at night (while continuing my construction career each day) to do exactly that!I can’t wait to build a legal practice supporting professional problem solvers—to help in their projects’ earliest planning efforts, advise through their biggest challenges, and celebrate their personal and project-related successes each step of the way.
