Hey, I’m Micah Kearns, founder & CEO of ILU Innovations. I’ve been driven by curiosity and a desire to create since I was young. I was the kid always daydreaming, asking “why?”, drawing with crayons, crafting forts, taking apart electronics, and building whole worlds with Legos. This progressed into a creative career, and I’ve spent the last 20 years freelancing design and illustration as Foxhaus Creative and serving as designer and creative director in many different industries. As the years passed, I’ve also honed my skills across a wide range of maker modalities, including CAD, CNC, laser cutting, 3D printing, metalwork, woodwork, and assemblage.I’m also drawn to personal growth, psychology, mental health, and leadership, which inspired me to found the Sacramento chapter of Fuckup Nights, a global series that celebrates the power of learning from failure. Perhaps ironically, this failed during the pandemic, so when the world reopened I took all of that knowledge and perspective and created Why We Fear Failure which plumbs psychology, physiology, sociology, and culture for insights about why we fear failure the way that we do, in order to better overcome it. For a post-‘rona mental reset, I decided to work remotely and vanlife around the US. It was during this time that I invented the Breathing Light, and transformed my van into a mobile workshop to hand-build the first prototype on a sun-drenched Florida afternoon. I went through the arduous process of developing and applying for a US patent, and doubled-down on my flexibility by taking a year-long backpacking journey through East Asia. While abroad, I continued developing the Breathing Light and WWFF, was interviewed and publicly spoke about creativity and fear of failure, and picked up a surprise side hustle of teaching business English to Koreans. Now that I have IP secured and I’m back in the US, I’m committed to founding my first startup and building ILU Innovations into something that will improve lives and change the world. I’m actively seeking to connect with mentors, incubators, and pre-seed funding. Please contact me if you live in the US and would like to support this mission in any possible way!

Founder | Ceo | Patent OwnerIlu Innovations Jan 2022 - PresentIlluminating A Better Tomorrow™After 2 years of hard work and learning and frustration and more hard work, I've finally been awarded my first utility patent with the US Patent & Trademark Office (Patent #11873976B1), for a consumer electronic IoT product that will make big waves in the health & wellness market, by leveraging breathwork to mitigate stress and anxiety for mental and physical health benefits. Additional patent applications are filed both in the US and abroad, and it's finally time to found a startup and get this new technology out so that it can help the world!I'm currently pre-seed, and the next step of this journey is to find mentorship and funding that can help me get up to speed, perform market research, and develop the next phase of prototype. Know anyone that would be interested in sharing some insight, connections, or resources? -

Owner | Content CreatorWhy We Fear Failure Mar 2023 - May 2024If You're Burning, You're Learning™**Project on hiatus while I focus on launching ILU Innovations**What can we learn from psychology, physiology, philosophy, sociology, or culture that gives us a better idea of why the fear of failure can be so terrifying to some but not others? How is a person's aversion to risk sculpted by genetics, conditioning, or trauma? How have the results of this impacted our history, culture, society, and economy? To answer these questions, I'm traveling the world while researching Why We Fear Failure, and what I learn along the way will be shared in presentations and workshops, on social media, and in a book. I'll also be interviewing cultural, business, political, and religious leaders about their insights on how the local culture views and manages fear of failure, and then publishing these interviews as podcasts. The hope of all this is that if we can understand the underlaying processes that drive our brains and bodies to react to fear the way that they do, we'll then have an opportunity to catch those reactions, understand why they’re happening, reframe the situation, and hopefully generate a new and improved outcome. And those new outcomes are a chance to change ourselves, our lives, and our society for the better.~~* I'm excited to share the knowledge that I've gathered so far, and am available for interviews or speaking events for organizations that would like to inspire their audience with insight and tools that can shift perspective and improve lives.** I'm networking to meet experts that have scientific, cultural, religious, political, business, or mental health insights to interview for the podcast and book. Know anyone that might like to contribute?*** I'm also looking for funding opportunities for a project like this, such as grants, scholarships, sponsors, partnerships, publication contracts, or other creative possibilities. -
Chapter Founder & OrganizerFuckup Nights Sacramento Jul 2019 - Jan 2022Sacramento, California AreaFuckup Nights is a global movement and event series that shares stories of professional failure. Each month, in events across the globe, we get three to four people to get up in front of a room full of strangers to share their own professional fuckup.
