Michael Barrett is a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years’ international experience in finance, strategy, corporate development, capital markets, investor relations, risk management and corporate governance, primarily in the resources industry. Experience includes multiple capital raisings, investor relations, organic business development (including R&D concepts to commercialization), Mergers and Acquisitions, divestments, safe harbour, business transformation from explorer to developer to producer, and joint venture negotiations.As a Consulting CFO and Corporate Advisor, he has focused on business value optimisation, fund raising, strategic planning, operating models, people, process and systems. From 2004 until 2015 Michael was based in the US with Rio Tinto's Energy business unit. Promoted to CFO in 2007, he was instrumental in leading Rio's divestment and successful listing of the business as Cloud Peak Energy Inc in a $2bn IPO on the NYSE, where it was an ASX100 equivalent size. After returning to Perth in 2015, Michael spent two years as National Lead Partner for Deloitte's Risk Advisory Energy and Resources practice, where he specialised in Corporate Governance, Board advisory and Risk Management for many of the largest mining and energy and resources companies nationally. Michael has a particular focus on Board advisory roles, strategic thinking, and M&A. He is recognised for constructive interaction to challenge accepted thinking and ensure stringent capital allocation. Previously he held a number of senior mining sector roles in WA, including with Rio Tinto Iron Ore and WMC Resources Ltd. He is a Chartered Accountant and started his career with Price Waterhouse in London.
