I loved working. I never wanted to retire. I got my first job at the age of nine, dusting the shelves of a grocery store in a small town in Missouri. Last December after 67 years in the work force, I closed my successful consultancy in the Pacific Northwest, resigned from the boards and my volunteer gigs at church and the VA and gave notice to my fun part-time employment in a prestigious cooking school. My wife was the one who said it was time. We now find ourselves overlooking the Mediterranean in a fishing village on the Peloponnese in Greece, at the shoreline of the Taygetos mountains.Looking back, I realize I did not make a career by myself. I owe thanks to a loving partner, gifted teachers, and many, many soldiers, bank clerks, payroll and human resources specialists whom I was honored to lead and manage. Those, and a host of giving associates through a larger network. If I didn’t thank you enough at the time, I do now.
