Michael Snyder Email and Phone Number
I’m an experienced data science professional with a passion for research and development. For the past two years, I have been involved with Northrop-Grumman, modeling and structuring massive data sets for business insights or innovating the ways in which new data can be collected, processed, and used.My creative and entrepreneurial nature, supported by the drive for continuous learning, has enabled my success in R&D data science. As a product-owner for rare-event detection at Northrop-Grumman, I lead projects from conception to development, ensuring they are fully funded. Whether creating a first-ever production-level data library or starting a new analytics business unit to develop a time-series analytics tool, my team and I have always exceeded expectations. Our goal is to maximize practical gains from data-driven reports and analyses to eliminate repetitive tasks, implement new processes, and improve anomaly detection.Additionally, I have an extensive academic background as well as teaching experience in math across several colleges and universities in Oregon and Utah. Most recently, I succeeded in raising funding to start a data science program at Snow College. If you would like to connect or know more about my professional story, please send me an InMail message or email me at mikeasnyder@gmail.com.Key Strengths: Data Science | Data Analytics | Data Management | Data Modeling | Data Analysis | Data Processing | Science Entrepreneurship | Technical Development | Communication | Team Leadership | Coding | Mathematics | Training & Mentoring | Research

Principal Data ScientistNorthrop Grumman Jan 2021 - Oct 2023Falls Church, Va, UsLead innovative research and development efforts, coaching and developing a team involved in coding, modeling, library building, anomaly detection, etc. Product owner for rare-event detection, expecting a patent for the technical work.• Collaborated with government entities to identify components that require Condition-Based Maintenance plus (CBM+) to ensure weapons system functions properly, developing models in the absence of any data• Created a first-ever production-level library using TensorFlow that is transferable beyond Python• Established a new analytics business unit within Northrop-Grumman focused on developing analytics software that is not yet available in the market by predicting future needs, e.g., a time-series analysis tool • Created a full-stack generalized time-series analysis toolkit that decreased annual costs by $4M and is currently being developed to serve ~100 satellite programs, including the Cygnus spacecraft, providing automated test-limit analysis and generation, anomaly detection, and anomaly forecasting• Signed the Space Act Agreement with NASA to bilaterally share intellectual property to increase innovation in reliability analysis for thousands of components on a major weapon system -
Tenure Track Faculty In Math And Data ScienceSnow College Aug 2018 - Jul 2022Ephraim, Ut, UsJoined the college as an instructor for Tenure Track Faculty, consulting for the Bachelor of Software Engineering program. Developed and launched a new data science program. Taught various data science topics, including:• Foundational probability and linear algebra for mining massive datasets• Analysis of algorithms for analyzing massive data sets (e.g., locality sensitive hashing, Random Forests, SVM, etc.)• Supervised and unsupervised learning applications on massive datasets (e.g., market basket analysis, similarity search, classification, etc.) -
DirectorUtah State University May 2016 - Jan 2017Logan, Utah, UsDirected and managed all aspects of grant evaluation, including research, writing, data analysis, IRB protocols, data management, and budgets.• Generated a 300-page report which was presented to the Utah state legislature, assessing and analyzing the efficiency of the grant evaluation process, as well as identifying areas of improvement• Introduced new grant metrics, including developing data systems for longitudinal studies, to improve and expand evaluation• Automated grant evaluation process by migrating from manual data input in Excel spreadsheets to a new process created using R & Python, reducing data processing time from months to a day and improving efficiency by 80%• Compiled a report suggesting the way to resolve legislation gaps to fund the program -
ResearcherUtah State University Mar 2014 - May 2015Logan, Utah, UsAs part of a master’s thesis, studied and displayed transition patterns among individuals experiencing homelessness and developed data-driven methods to determine population change in the Utah homeless network. Built a data dashboard using Shiny for R to visualize data and transition patterns among homeless individuals, structuring all the data cohesively and providing state stakeholders with service improvement recommendations -
ResearcherUtah State University Nov 2014 - Apr 2015Logan, Utah, UsCollaborated with the Education Assistant to the Governor to assess future funding needs for public school counselors. Designed a survey instrument to assess school counselor time allocation and activity patterns and implemented this survey across several public schools in Utah, collecting and analyzing obtained data
