I am one of three optometrists at this small and very busy clinic. We provide primary optometry care to 15,000 permanent and temporarily stationed service members of all branches. Our mission is to maintain service members' combat readiness as it relates to vision correction and ocular health. Special testing, blood work, and imaging studies are routinely performed. We work closely with primary care, aviation medical teams, and other specialties.The occupational therapy traumatic brain injury specialists refer their patients to me for consultations, and recommendations for therapy and other testing. My unique position provides care for individuals who are struggling in everyday life due to brain injury.My duties also involve supervision of civilian staff including optometrists and technicians, as well as the soldiers assigned to the clinic.

I assisted in the teaching of laboratory courses for the first and second-year optometry students. These laboratory sections were complimentary to lecture given in procedure and ocular disease classes. I assisted the professors in teaching students how to perform: refraction, binocular vision assessment, biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, Goldmann applination tonometry, placement of punctal plugs, and foreign body removal. This is not a comprehensive list. Additional responsibilities included the evaluation of students at the above named tasks, grading of written assignments, and hosting additional study/practice sessions before and after regular instruction hours.

I trained and studied martial arts for over 15 years and taught other students for 9 of those years. In 2010, I received my official instructor certification. The other instructors and I would work as a team to conduct classes, testings, performances, and other seminars with students aged 3-70+ years old. I adapted and developed my teaching and leadership skills in an environment with a large variety of people. There were often children who required additional attention and we would help them succeed in being a part of the team.

I assisted researchers in a study entitled, The Genetics of Taste. My position involved recruiting visitors of the museum to volunteer to enroll in the study and gathering relevant data from them. Relevant data included subjective responses to taste stimulus, and objective data such as a DNA sample. When not enrolling visitors, I supported the Biology Base Camp stations in the Expedition Health exhibit by providing supplies and direction for visitors to conduct structured experiments. The procedures the visitors performed included microscopy, evaluation of bacteria samples with UV light and fluorescent indicator, DNA extraction from plant material, and solute measurement via refraction.

My laboratory technician responsibilities were centered at the biology department of the university. I was responsible for maintaining the anatomy/physiology labs for the professors and students. Lab activities would include dissections of specimens, analysis of samples, and non-invasive tests students would perform on each other. I ensured that all supplies were available when needed and removed once all lab sections completed the activity. The professors and I worked together so that the students had the best learning environment possible. I kept the samples and specimens organized and clean to prevent contamination, loss, or damage. I was also the only person in the department with this position and therefore was self-managed.

At MSUD, I worked in the bursar's office handling tuition, payments, and other aspects of the students' finances at the university. I handled inquires, payments, and adjustments with the students over the phone and in person. The office would work as a team when more difficult issues would arise. During these cooperative events, my role was to make suggestions, follow the instructions of my supervisors, and help manage my coworkers to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Clear communication and professionalism were exercised at all times to ensure respect and understanding for all parties involved.
