About Michael A Perlin
A theoretical atomic physicist by training, I currently have the privilege of working with amazing colleagues studying quantum computing in the Global Technology Applied Research group at JPMorganChase.I am passionate about computers and quantum physics, leading to a natural interest in quantum computing. I am particularly interested in quantum error correction and the role that it plays (to date, theoretically) in enabling *practical* quantum computation. One of my passion projects is the development of a Python library to construct and analyze (read: tinker with) quantum error-correcting codes, at https://github.com/Infleqtion/qLDPCBefore my current job, I was a quantum theory manager at Infleqtion, where I studied quantum computing, quantum error correction, and quantum sensing.Academic background:I got my PhD in AMO physics in 2021, advised by Ana Maria Rey Rey at JILA (NIST and the University of Colorado at Boulder). Before my PhD, I spent a year in the Controlled Quantum Dynamics Group at Ulm University in Germany (funded by a DAAD graduate scholarship), and before that I completed my BS in physics at Oregon State University in 2015.Google scholar profile:https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Dfm7AYEAAAAJ&hl=en

Quantum Algorithms And Compilers (Quantum Research Scientist)
Worked briefly on (1) quantum algorithms to solve constrained optimization problems, and (2) quantum compilers for neutral atom quantum computers... before Super.tech was acquired by Infleqtion/ColdQuanta!
Quantum Simulation And Metrology (Research Assistant)
Studied quantum magnetism and many-body physics of ultracold atoms in optical lattices, with a particular focus on applications for quantum simulation and precision metrology (e.g. atomic clocks and quantum sensors). Advisor: Ana Maria Rey.----------Enhancing spin squeezing using soft-core.
Quantum Error Correction (Graduate Intern)
Studied (1) measurement-free quantum error correction and (2) using a QAOA-inspired algorithm to prepare the ground state of a spin model. Intriguingly, these two projects were in fact one and the same.Supervisors: Albert T. Schmitz and Anne Y. Matsuura.
Quantum Computing (Research Aide)
A summer internship that led to more long-term collaboration. Mostly studied quantum circuit cutting, as well as quantum algorithms to evaluate tensor networks. Advisors: Dr. Martin Suchara, Dr. James C. Osborn, Dr. Xiao-Yong Jin.----------Quantum Circuit Cutting with Maximum-Likelihood.
Quantum Memory (Research Assistant)
Studied nitrogen vacancy centers (NV) and their interactions with surrounding carbon-13 nuclear spins, working in particular to develop a noise-resilient quantum register by addressing a decoherence-free subspace of nuclear spins. Worked primarily with Zhenyu Wang under Martin Plenio. Funded by the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD) Graduate.
Bioinformatics (Research Assistant)
This project was concerned with the development and formalism of a new measure of error, called the proportion of unexpected correlations (PUC), in regulatory networks reconstructed from parameter correlation data. As a proof of concept for PUC's application in a variety of fields, I reconstructed and analyzed economic networks using data collected from.
Computational Physics (Research Assistant)
Developed Monte Carlo simulations of the square-well fluid to test density functional theories. Implemented and developed so-called histogram methods for collecting statistics on low energy system states, which are requisite for understanding thermodynamic properties of the square-well fluid near its critical point. Developed metrics to measure and compare.
Nuclear Fuel Cycles (Research Assistant)
Investigated the feasibility of plutonium recycling in pressurized water reactors via iterative mixed-oxide fuel reprocessing. Advisor: Alexey Soldatov.Won the 2014 US Department of Energy Innovations in Fuel Cycle Research AwardTechnical abstract:Plutonium is currently used for nuclear energy production in the form of mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel in a.
Summer Intern
Worked with James Ira Thorpe and Jacob P. Slutsky to build spacecraft models and data analysis routines for the LISA Pathfinder, a joint mission between NASA and the European Space Agency. My primary work was in developing a system routine to characterize microthrusters on the LISA Pathfinder and identify post-launch drifts in their orientations and.
Summer Intern
Wrote Monte Carlo simulations of electron transport through an inert gas in a custom-built electron gun as part of a larger investigation into the application of electron guns for mitigation of surface contaminants in both terrestrial and spaceflight applications. Simulation results were used to provide feedback and recommend modifications to gun design..
Teaching Assistant
Proctored general physics (PH 201) labs and graded student work.
Research Assistant
Laboratory assistance and field work for the Ocean Mixing Group at Oregon State University.
Programming Captain
Managed the development of code for Team 0955 in the FIRST Robotics Competition, and taught incoming students the basics of object-oriented programming in C++ and Java.
