Graphics/Systems Software Engineer
For the past 4 years, I’ve been building a high-performance, PBR, multi-GPU graphics engine from scratch called Sunrise. With 10,000+ hours and 60,000+ lines of C++ code this has been the most technically challenging project I have worked on. One of the main reasons I believe my graphics engine is so challenging is because abstraction has to be limited in order to grab every last bit of performance. There is no such thing as a zero-cost abstraction: with every layer comes inefficiencies. In most systems this is just exempted and ignored and that is fine (or the cost of labor would exceed the budget if this was taken into account). This is not the case for Sunrise.Graphics engines in general are very complex and require a low level understanding; many abstractions are made to make development easier. There are also simplifications that can be made due to simplicity of common use cases. However, working on Sunrise is far more complex because it needs to be crazy fast (right now it runs at 10x real time for a single window, rendering around a million polygons) and work across multiple windows, monitors, and graphics cards. The latter, especially using multiple GPUs, is exceptionally rare. In order to be 10x faster than existing solutions, means that I’ve had to have a very strong grasp of all graphics concepts (not just pasting code from tutorials) and be able to implement everything with a very low level of abstraction. This greatly adds to why I say this has been the most complicated thing in computer science I have found thus far.Graphics Engines are very complicated on their own without my added complexities. For example, they have to communicate with and program the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) of a computer, which work by having hundreds of thousands of tasks in progress at one time. This means you must coordinate all of these tasks while minimizing stalling (the pausing of one task while it waits for data from another task).
Software Application Developer
• Designed and fully programed multiple iOS apps. Top app garnered 50,000 downloads and 7,000 monthly active users.• Created and released an app to securely edit and delete iMessages months before Apple introduced those features themselves.• Achieved app ranking in the top 30 of utility apps on the iMessage App Store. The details for a few of my apps are listed below:Super MessagingWith Super Messaging, you can create and share custom message bubble styles that you can use in your conversations in the iMessage app and then edit and delete your messages after they've been sent. I created and released this app several months before Apple unveiled their own (less feature complete version) of message editing and deletion. The most technically challenging part of this project was implementing message editing and deleting in a secure and cheaply scalable way. I ended up with an elegant solution that checked both of those boxes. All message edits are end-to-end encrypted and remote database entries only need to be made when a user edits a message not when a message is originally sent.Landscape PapersLandscape Papers has a large collection of beautiful landscape and nature wallpapers. You can browse the full catalog or just catch the daily featured photos. For this project, I not only created the app and website frontend, but also the required backend for allowing anyone to create an account, upload photos and submit them for review. In the future, photographers will be paid a portion of their ad revenue through Stripe Connect. I also had to use a CDN to economically scale the distributing large image files.
Back-End Developer
• Collaborated with the development team to design and implement backend endpoints.• Implemented a continuous deployment system, managed service provisioning, and established an Azure-based development staging server, resulting in increased speed of development.
The Dark Byte - Sole And Lead Programmer
• Created and anticipated all software for team’s robot.• Acted as sole owner of the team’s software development during high pressure competition.• Played a pivotal role in helping team reach the championships for first time in school history.• To effectively collaborate during competitions, succinctly conveyed complicated technical issues to team members specialized in other areas.• One of the only teams in the regional competitions with software that successfully stabilized the robotic arm system.• Zero points lost due to software malfunctions.
Vice President
• Guided chapter members through technical projects.• Coordinated fundraisers and developed all technology for the fundraisers.
Team, Cad And Software Lead
• Orchestrated development of custom built model rocket.• Designed flight computer and flight software.• Created mission control software and communication protocol to allow for transition of telemetry, mission clock and commands between mission control and rocket.
